BEYOND THE BODY: ONE DAY PINA ASKED…
18th April 2018 @ 19:00 - 22:00
“When I watched one of Pina’s performances for the first time, I was overcome by an emotion I can’t quite define” – Chantal Akerman
Orlando presents ‘ONE DAY PINA ASKED…’ (1983, 57 mins), from the auteur and innovator of experimental and feminist cinema, Chantal Akerman. This screening marks the second event in an ongoing series of happenings, and follows the February screening of Marcie Begleiter’s ‘EVA HESSE’ (2016). These events are all loosely related to the next print issue of Orlando, Issue 03: Beyond the Body (scheduled for Autumn 2018), and all ticket sales will go towards raising funds for this forthcoming publication.
An encounter between two remarkable figures from the twentieth century, and with cinematography by Babette Mangolte, ‘ONE DAY PINA ASKED…’ is Chantal Akerman’s look at the work of choreographer Pina Bausch and her Germany-based dance company: the Tanztheater Wuppertal. “This film is more than a documentary on Pina Bausch,” a narrator announces at the outset, “it is a journey through her world, through her unwavering quest for love.” Bausch was one of the most significant figures of modern dance, and the pioneer of a unique style. Her striking dances and elaborate stagings explored a mixture of movement, monologue and narrative elements, drawing upon explosive, often painful emotions.
Before the film starts, there will be an introduction from Orlando’s founding editor, Philomena Epps, followed by two readings from the writers and academics, Alice Blackhurst and Octavia Bright.
