BLACK GIRL + THE SLEEPER + TALK by Miranda Armstrong
April 6 @ 14:00 - 16:00
Lives Unwritten: Women & Domestic Work on Film: Double-Bill – BLACK GIRL + THE SLEEPER + TALK by Miranda Armstrong at The Geffrye Museum of the Home (06 APR 14:00):
The Geffrye Museum presents Ousmane Sembène’s visually striking and devastatingly shocking, BLACK GIRL, alongside the intimate and absorbing short docufiction, THE SLEEPER, as part of LIVES UNWRITTEN: WOMEN AND DOMESTIC WORK ON FILM. A season exploring female relationships with the labour of the home.
The double-bill will be introduced by Miranda Armstrong, a PhD researcher and Associate Lecturer at Goldsmiths. Her research explores the impact of race, gender and class on family lives and personal relationships.
BLACK GIRL remains a formative work of world cinema. Through its deceptively simple approach, Sembène’s groundbreaking first feature explicitly addresses the complex and violent legacy of colonialism. Mbissine Thérèse Diop delivers an intense and mesmerising performance as Diouana, a servant who dreams of a better life. Diouana leaves Dakar to work for a young white couple on the French Riviera, but her glamorous fantasies are brutally crushed when she is confined to the never-ending chores and routines of their tiny apartment.
THE SLEEPER reconstructs and imagines the stories of two inconspicuous women whose personalities were forcibly hidden behind their roles as wives and homemakers. Extrinsically determined throughout their lives, the only way the women could end the spiral of everyday violence was to resort to violence themselves.
