THE MAN WHO LAUGHS with The Meg Morley Trio
March 14 @ 19:30 - 21:30
The 1901 Arts Club presents: THE MAN WHO LAUGHS with The Meg Morley Trio (14 MAR 19:30):
Made at the end of the silent era by a cast and crew largely made up of German émigrés to Hollywood, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS (1928) is a fascinating mix of styles as European expressionism and Victor Hugo’s story collide with Hollywood’s taste for swashbuckling adventure.
Conrad Veidt (Casablanca, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari) plays Gwynplaine, a man of noble birth condemned by a permanent grin to live his life with a (not at all coincidental) resemblance to a certain comic book villain. Can he overcome adversity and find love in the arms of Dea (Mary Philbin)?
Providing the accompaniment to this tale of tragedy, love and derring-do, we’re excited to hear an improvised score from Meg Morley on piano, Richard Sadler on double bass and Emiliano Caroselli on drums.
