THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) + THE HAUNTED HOUSE (1921) + LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT
November 27 @ 19:30 - 21:30
The 1901 Arts Club presents: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) + THE HAUNTED HOUSE (1921) + LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT by Meg Morley at The 1901 Arts Club (27 NOV 19:30):
Immortalised as ‘the man of a thousand faces’, Lon Chaney Sr. was one of the giants of silent cinema, combining an intense acting style with ground-breaking make-up techniques to deliver a series of powerhouse performances. He is now perhaps best remembered for his horror roles, with one of the most famous being THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925). The result of some happy chance when the studio head on his holidays in Paris bumped into an author, this is the first of many (apparently there’s a musical kicking around somewhere?) on screen appearances of the hideously disfigured phantom but Chaney’s depiction remains definitive.
Opening the evening is a slightly lighter slice of supernatural fun, Buster Keaton’s THE HAUNTED HOUSE (1921) sees our hero take on a gang of bank robbers before events take a spooky turn…
We’re delighted to be joined again by Meg Morley on piano. A classically-trained pianist and composer, Meg is fast becoming one of the UK’s pre-eminent silent film accompanists with recent appearances at the Flatpack Film Festival, Pordenone Silent Film Festival and London Film Festival. Together with The Meg Morley Trio, Meg has also been commissioned by the British Film Institute as part of its Comedy Genius season to produce a new score for the cinema and home release of The Marvellous Mabel Normand.
The trio’s album and Meg’s solo piano EP can be found on Bandcamp, iTunes or at www.megmorleymusic.com.
