Other Cinemas returns with an opening online event for 2021. If you haven’t come across this exhibitor before, Other Cinemas was established by Turab Shah and Arwa Aburawa to promote “independent cinema for curious minds” with a particular emphasis on showcasing the work of black and non-white filmmakers. In normal times they specialise in staging free community events in Brent and often include Q&As with filmmakers in their programmes. Now, with the power of the internet, they’re projecting a little further afield.

Their next event is a free online screening of the recently restored 1955 classic PATHER PANCHALI, a masterpiece of Indian cinema. Directed by Satyajit Ray, it was the first Indian film to receive international acclaim, winning awards at Cannes and the Baftas. If you haven’t seen it, you really should.

The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with Hannan Majid of the Rainbow Collective and Bengali actor Toufikul Emon. Together, they will explore the enduring legacy of the film.

PATHER PANCHALI

d. Satyajit Ray, 1955/India

“With the release in 1955 of Satyajit Ray’s debut, PATHER PANCHALI, an eloquent and important new cinematic voice made itself heard all over the world. A depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italian neorealism, this naturalistic but poetic evocation of a number of years in the life of a family introduces us to both little Apu and, just as essentially, the women who will help shape him.”

Register online via the Other Cinemas eventbrite page.

The film will be available to watch at 18:00 GMT (UK + North America only), with the discussion taking place at approximately 20:15 on Other Cinemas’ Facebook page.
