Richmond Film Society started projecting in 1963 and has now screened more than 800 films. Their splendid 57th season continues at The Exchange (07 JAN to 16 JUN 2020) with another lineup of well-made world cinema titles.

We visited in SEP 2019 for their screening of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s SHOPLIFTERS (2018) and to launch our #32BoroughsOfFilm. We found their “emphasis is almost entirely on the community ritual of gathering together in the dark to encounter flickering lights on the wall” offering a mix of “second run, intelligent world cinema on a big screen at an affordable price [that] is hard to beat” (Read more of that writeup HERE).

#32BoroughsOfFilm will take in other boroughs and community film clubs but we plan on making many more returns to Richmond Film Society. If you’re local – and aren’t already a member – grab yourself a £5 ticket (£3 for full-time students) and we’ll see you there soon.

THE WHITE CROW d. Ralph Fiennes, 2018 at The Exchange (07 JAN 20:00):

  • “The dramatic story of Rudolph Nureyev, from his humble beginnings to his defection to the West in 1961, when he was the world’s most famous male ballet dancer. The period is immaculately reconstructed.”

CAPERNAUM d. Nadine Labaki, 2018 at The Exchange (21 JAN 20:00):

  • “An Oscar nominated, endearing, heart-wrenching, tragi-comic film. A young Lebanese boy runs away and is befriended by an Ethiopian immigrant; he then, in turn, looks after her infant. Ultimately imprisoned for a violent crime, he sues his parents for giving birth to him…”

FOXTROT d. Samuel Maoz, 2017 at The Exchange (04 FEB 20:00):

ONE CUT OF THE DEAD d. Shin’ichirô Ueda, 2017 at The Exchange (18 FEB 20:00 – main featured image!):

  • “A minor movie, latched on to at the Udine Far East Film Festival, went on to become an international hit and one of the biggest grossing Japanese films of recent years, A multi- film film and the funniest zombie movie you will ever see!”

3 FACES d. Jafar Panahi, 2018 at The Exchange (03 MAR 20:00):

  • “Fascinating road-trip depicting rural Iran/Turkish life. An actress receives an upsetting phone video in which a provincial girl pleads for help but is it genuine ? She hitches a ride with Panahi to get to the bottom of the matter…”

WOMAN AT WAR d. Benedikt Erlingsson, 2018 at The Exchange (17 MAR 20:00):

  • “An environmental activist wages her own private war against an industrial threat to Iceland’s remote parts. The heroine’s single minded crusade is given an unexpected jolt. The film is brilliantly acted and compelling with surreal touches.”

CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME ? d. Marielle Heller, 2018 at The Exchange (28 APR 20:00):

  • “A biographical black comedy about how impecunious biographer, Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy), aided and abetted by her dissolute drinking buddy, Jack (Richard E. Grant), became a serial forger of letters from deceased authors and playwrights.”

THUNDER ROAD d. Jim Cummings, 2018 at The Exchange (28 MAY 20:00):

And that’s the meat of it…
