The East End’s historic Genesis Cinema has announced a new David Lynch season called, appropriately enough, SECRETS, MYSTERY, ABSURDITY: THE WORLD OF DAVID LYNCH (02 to 25 APR 2019). As well as some great films, there’s a unique collab with the David Lynch Foundation which gives added value in the form of a free screening and discussion: MEDITATION, CREATIVITY, PEACE. This 2012 documentary is an account of Lynch’s European and Middle East tours between 2007 and 2009 when he visited 16 countries promoting “the extraordinary benefits for creativity and peace to be gained by transcending thought with Transcendental Meditation” (IMDb).

Elsewhere in the programme, Genesis’s stable of regular collaborators offers great supporting action. DUNE (1984) is presented by Truman’s Brewery (giving you a pint of your choice with your ticket for just £5.50) and THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980) projects with an introduction by Nick Walker from Rochester Kino under the guise of the Cult Classic Collective (hang around for chat about the film in the bar afterwards with Nick and your new weirdo friends).

From a RADIANT CIRCUS perspective, we’d put a vote in for DUNE. Now, it’s widely criticised for being incomprehensible (it’s a walk in the park compared to INLAND EMPIRE…), and the director famously doesn’t like what happened to it, but we feel Lynch’s world-building has never been so epic. The opulent sets and costumes are unrivalled in these CGI times, there’s a ridiculous level of creativity in the VFX (including those by E.T.’s dad, Carlo Rambaldi), and that score by Toto (with a pinch of Brian Eno) propels it to another level. Ok, so Sting in a jockstrap might be too much for some, but every aspect of Lynch’s trademark vision is here. We encourage you to give it a go on the big screen where it always looks and sounds stunning. And if you haven’t done so, read Ed Naha’s account of how the film was made amidst the chaos and craftsmanship of Mexico’s film industry to drop your jaw.

SECRETS, MYSTERY, ABSURDITY: THE WORLD OF DAVID LYNCH screens at Genesis Cinema (02 APR to 02 MAY 2019).
