International travel is just one of the many MIA elements of a modern life right now. If you’d normally be scrolling through the latest Lonely Planet editions or calculating currency conversions at this time of year, let South Social Film Festival transport you around the globe with their ongoing series of streaming cineclubs.

First launched in 2015, South Social dedicates every event to a different country, turning their events into “a platform to celebrate diversity, community inclusion and emerging talents”. Recognising cinema as a powerful social connector, their live events transport your taste buds with food pairings as well as music and dance alongside each film. They also partner with London’s global collection of embassies and cultural agencies to stage their events, ensuring each screening offers an authentic image of a country’s cultural roots.

The next South Social online event transports you to Norway for a documentary about the aftermath of an audacious art theft (THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF – 11 FEB 19:00). The film streams on BFI Player and will be followed by a free Zoom Q&A with one of the subjects of the documentary, artist Barbora Kysilkova at 21:00.

You can also book ahead for the next editions of South Socials’ Denmark (17 FEB – THE HUNT d. Thomas Vinterberg, 2012) and Iceland (23 FEB – RAMS d. Grímur Hákonarson, 2015) Cineclubs.

Norway Cineclub: THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF

d. Benjamin Ree, 2020/Norway

In collaboration with the Embassy of Norway, South Social present a screening of THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF directed by Benjamin Ree (2020). The documentary follows the artist Barbora Kysilkova as she forms a friendship with Karl Bertil-Nordland, a man who stole her artwork.

Watch the film at 11 FEB 19:00 on BFI Player. The screening will then be followed by a discussion with the painter Barbora Kysilkova on Zoom at 21:00.

South Social’s films are streamed from BFI Player. They have been sending participants a special voucher code when you register to get you a significant amount of free time on the BFI platform…

You also need to register to join the various special features on Zoom (these events are FREE!).

Donations are invited when you book to support Social Social through these challenging times.

  • Sponsor DIY, indie & alternative cinema
  • Celebrate outstanding acts of exhibition
