Artists’ Film International (AFI) is a collaborative project featuring film, video and animation from around the world. Established by the Whitechapel Gallery in 2008, AFI includes 20 global partner organisations. Each organisation selects an exciting recent work by an artist from their region which is shared amongst the network. The programme is adapted to every venue and is shown over the course of a year.

In normal times, the Whitechapel Gallery projects a selection of works each season in their Zilkha Auditorium as part of the gallery’s exhibitions programme. For the first time this year, the East End gallery is bringing the films to their website, where they are available for a limited time.

The Artists Film International 2021 programme responds to the theme of ‘care’. The first selection of four works is available to stream online until 28 MAR 2021. Scroll down to discover what’s on.

“FLIGHT FROM THE CITY (2015) is about connection, love, separation and transition. Starkly shot in ‘black’ water in the hot springs at Flúðir, Iceland, Langan focuses on the powerful bond between a mother and daughter.”

“Six female narrators share personal experiences in an audition roll call, some scripted, some spontaneous. Their testimonies describe perverse scenarios where racialisation and gender dynamics inflect the encounters of each protagonist in the workplace, religious spaces or sexual trysts.”

THE BOX

d. Sena Başöz, 2020/Turkey

“THE BOX (2020) explores gestures of care and compassion as hands gently stroke a woman’s hair revealing symbolic objects hidden in her locks.”

CLEANSING

d. Wojciech Dada, Katarzyna Górna & Rafał Jakubowicz, 2020/Poland

“CLEANSING refers to the 2001 American production entitled ‘Conspiracy’ (distributed in Poland with the Polish title ‘Ostateczne rozwiązanie’, literally meaning “final solution”). The American film is based on archival protocols documenting a conference held in Wannsee on 20 January 1942, where a group of Nazi dignitaries gathered to “resolve the Jewish question”. “
