FILMS IN LONDON TODAY

SINGLE-O EXHIBITS

Films in London today: THE QUEEN at ICA (15 AUG).
Films in London today: THE QUEEN at ICA (15 AUG).

THE BITTER TEA OF GENERAL YEN + INTRO by Pamela Hutchinson at BFI Southbank (15 AUG 18:20):

  • Worlds away from the folksy America of the later ‘Capracorn’ movies, this sees a missionary (Barbara Stanwyck) separated from her fiancé during the Chinese Civil War and rescued by the titular warlord, who proves to be highly sophisticated – and devoted to her.

THE EYES OF ORSON WELLES + Q&A with director Mark Cousins at DocHouse (15 AUG 18:30):

  • Before becoming an actor and director, Orson Welles trained as an artist. He painted and drew throughout his life, sketching set designs, storyboards, ideas and places and people that inspired him. Award-winning director Mark Cousins, a life-long Welles admirer, is granted unprecedented access to Welles’ sketches – most of which have never been seen outside of his family – and with it builds a picture of the unique way Welles saw the world.

FROM THE THIRD EYE at ICA (15 AUG 18:30 & 20:30):

  • Writing Workshop: a discursive workshop on writing about artists’ and experimental film, led by critic and curator Ed Halter, and artist and editor of Little Joe magazine Sam Ashby.
  • THE QUEEN: Director Frank Simon’s rarely screened documentary follows Jack, a 24-year-old drag queen named Flawless Sabrina; a mistress of ceremonies for the 1967 Miss All-America Camp Beauty Pageant. The judges, including artist Andy Warhol, actress and model Edie Sedgwick and writer Terry Southern, have a hard time deciding on the winner.

Films in London today: UNDER THE TREE at Barbican (15 AUG).

HEATHERS: 30TH ANNIVERSARY at The Prince Charles (15 AUG 16:10 & 21:00):

  • In order to get out of the snobby clique that is destroying her good-girl reputation, intelligent teen Veronica (Winona Ryder) teams up with a dark sociopath, J.D. (Christian Slater) in a plot to kill the cool kids in what is one of the decade’s defining cult classics of 1980s cinema.

LEANING INTO THE WIND – ANDY GOLDSWORTHY at ArtHouse Crouch End (15 AUG 14:45):

  • Sixteen years after their first collaboration on the groundbreaking RIVERS AND TIDES, filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer returns with an absorbing documentary portrait of the influential British sculptor and environmentalist.

UNDER THE TREE at Barbican (15 AUG 18:15):

  • This dark suburban satire tells the story of a man who is accused of adultery by his ex-fiancée and forced to move in with his parents. While he fights for custody of his four-year-old daughter, he is gradually sucked into a bitter dispute between his parents and their neighbours regarding an old and beautiful tree that casts a shadow on the neighbours’ deck.
