Featured attraction: SAMA 35mm + Q&A with director Néjia Ben Mabrouk at BFI Southbank (18 AUG 17:30) in partnership with London Feminist Film Festival (16 to 19 AUG): “Men are very privileged in our societies, so they profit from their privilege – naturally. I must say that even if they are well meaning, sometimes they idealise women. Woman is not a dream, she is a reality… That’s what I want to talk about.” – Néjia Ben Mabrouk quoted in VERTIGO: From Tangiers to Tehran: Cinema, Women and the Middle East.

Based on the true-life Hatfield–McCoy feud, this was the last film of Buster’s wife Natalie Talmadge, who had married in 1921.

DREAMGIRLS + SILENT DISCO at Alexandra Palace (18 AUG 20:00):

  • Block Party Cinema presents a special screening under the stars at Alexandra Palace, one of London’s most iconic sites. Once you’re all danced out, sit back, relax and enjoy the film, overlooking the spectacular London skyline…

SAMA 35mm + Q&A with director Néjia Ben Mabrouk at BFI Southbank (18 AUG 17:30):

Films in London this week: MILDRED PIERCE at BFI.

DISTANT CONSTELLATION at ICA (18 AUG 18:45):

  • Shevaun Mizrahi’s debut documentary feature records the stories told by the residents of a retirement home in Istanbul. Sitting somewhere between ethnography and magical realism, the retirement home is situated in a tower whose interior walls are bestowed with an almost painterly quality by Mizrahi’s post-production.

THE EYES OF ORSON WELLES at The Institute Of Light (18 AUG 20:30):

  • Granted exclusive access to hundreds of private drawings and paintings by Orson Welles, filmmaker Mark Cousins dives deep into the visual world of this legendary director and actor, to reveal a portrait of the artist as he’s never been seen before – through his own eyes, sketched with his own hand, painted with his own brush.

MILDRED PIERCE at BFI Southbank (18 AUG 15:30 & 20:40):

  • Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford, in her only Oscar®-winning role) is brought in for questioning after her second husband is shot. Through a series of flashbacks we track Mildred’s extraordinary life.
