FEATURED ATTRACTION

CIELO d. Alison McAlpine, 2018 UK Premiere + Panel Discussion with the director & editor/sound designer Walter Murch at ICA (25 SEP 18:30):

“CIELO is a cinematic reverie on the beauty of the night sky as experienced in the Atacama Desert, Chile, one of the best places on earth to contemplate its splendour. this nonfiction film drifts between science and spirituality, with remarkable images of galaxies, arid land and desert shores. Interviews with astronomers and desert dwellers ground the film, as they share their evocative visions of the stars and planets, mythic stories and existential queries.”

Films in London today: CHILDREN OF MEN at The Castle Cinema (25 SEP).

CHILDREN OF MEN d. Alfonso Cuarón, 2006 + Talk: People on the Move by Steve Ballinger at The Castle Cinema (25 SEP 18:45):

Science Fiction Theatre presents: “In 2027, following 18 years of global human infertility, the world is a bleak and hostile place. Former activist Theo (Clive Owen) drifts through the violence-riven streets of London without hope or purpose. However, when he reluctantly agrees to help former lover Julian (Julianne Moore) smuggle a miraculously pregnant refugee out of the country, he is unwittingly thrust into the role of all that stands between the human race and its extinction.”

INGEBORG HOLM d. Victor Sjöström, 1913 + THE WISHING RING 16mm d. Maurice Tourneur, 1914 + Intro by Kevin Brownlow at The Cinema Museum (25 SEP 19:30):

Kennington Bioscope presents: “The 1913 Swedish film INGEBORG HOLM is a social drama directed by Victor Sjöström, who later worked in Hollywood under the anglicised surname Seastrom. Reportedly based on a true story, it was adapted from a 1906 stage play by Nils Krok, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sjöström. While one needs to be wary of naming any `firsts’ in movie history, INGEBORG HOLM has been called the first true narrative film.”

GRIND SHOWS

RADIANT CIRCUS #ScreenGuide - Films in London today: AD ASTRA at The Lexi (20 to 26 SEP).
Films in London today: AD ASTRA at The Lexi (20 to 26 SEP).

AD ASTRA d. James Gray, 2019 at The Lexi (25 JAN 18:20 & 20:50):

“For those who need a bit more to go on, this is a quietly epic inversion of sci fi classics like 2001 and INTERSTELLAR, which perpetuated the myth of the square-jawed, heroic astronaut. True enough, Major Roy McBride (Pitt) is plenty heroic as he sails off into the limbo of outer space, tasked with finding the source of the radioactive energy surges paralysing Earth. There’s a suspicion back at command centre that the attacks might be connected to Roy’s father (Tommy Lee Jones), a legendary scientist who disappeared 10 years previously while on an experiment to harness energy in space.”

THE FAREWELL d. Lulu Wang, 2019 at Barbican (25 SEP 18:20 & 20:40):

“Starring Awkwafina as Billi, a young woman living in New York who moved to America from China with her parents when she was a child. She is horrified to find out that her grandma, still living in China, has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and she and her parents but travel to China to say goodbye for the last time.”

SWARM SEASON d. Sarah J Christman, 2019 at DocHouse (25 SEP 18:30):

“On the remote volcanic island of Hawaii, 10-year-old Manu and her mother collect wild, endangered bees in order to breed disease-resistant colonies. Manu’s father is protesting on the sacred mountain Mauna Kea against the establishment of a gigantic telescope. On a neighbouring mountain, six NASA scientists practice living on Mars, and under the ground and the water, the Kilauea volcano quivers fatefully.”
