FILMS IN LONDON TODAY

SINGLE-O EXHIBITS

Films in London today: ALICE, SWEET ALICE at BFI (26 JUL).
Films in London today: ALICE, SWEET ALICE at BFI (26 JUL).

ALICE, SWEET ALICE at BFI Southbank (26 JUL 20:50):

  • Appearing two years before John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN defined a genre, this classy slasher prototype featured a young Brooke Shields (in her screen debut) as a young girl brutally murdered at her first holy communion. As the mayhem escalates, could her older sister be the culprit? Part of BFI’s Terror Vision strand.

LIFE IS WONDERFUL + Q&A with director Sir Nick Stadlen at DocHouse (26 JUL 18:30):

  • Nelson Mandela’s Rivonia Trial was one of the most gripping and important trials in legal history, charging Mandela and members of the group of South Africans who were planning to overthrow apartheid with the capital offence of sabotage. This documentary follows the lead up to the trial, its duration and aftermath.

SARA JORDENÖ’S KIKI AND TRAVIS ALABANZA POETRY READING at Tate Britain (26 JUL 19:00):

  • In New York City, LGBTQ youth-of-colour practice a performance-based artform, Ballroom. The artform was made famous by Madonna’s music video Vogue and the documentary Paris Is Burning. Twenty-five years after these cultural touchstones, a new and very different generation of LGBTQ youth have formed an artistic activist subculture, named the Kiki Scene.

SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS accompanied by The Meg Morley Trio at 1901 Arts Club (26 JUL 19:30):

  • A regular feature in discussions of the greatest movies ever made (ranking #5 in the latest Sight & Sound critics poll) SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS (1927) tells the deceptively simple tale of The Man (George O’Brien) and The Wife (Janet Gaynor), whose peaceful country life is shaken by the arrival of The Woman from the City (Margaret Livingston). Before that, another absolute gem in the shape of THE GOAT (1921). One of Buster Keaton’s most surreal (and best!) short comedies

A PRAYER BEFORE DAWN at Ciné Lumière (26 JUL 20:30).
