FEATURED ATTRACTION

We sometimes feel adrift from auteurist ‘blockbuster’ programmes as they can project a long, monochrome light across some of London’s most significant screens. At a time when awards juries are struggling with how to recognise the full diversity of talent creating films globally, epic rep seasons seem to buck the trend (no matter how many sidebar sessions attempt to conjure a fresh critical perspective). They also erect, through their sheer encyclopaedic scale, barriers to participation of time, money and access, running the risk of being the frequent flyer, Business Club Class elite of global film appreciation.

If director is your programming angle of choice (and why only this creative talent, with occasional nods to genre or those onscreen?), we tend to love smaller seasons where the still-developing careers of contemporary creators can be showcased in their entirety. Of course, the same works for retired filmmakers who gifted us more modest filmographies for a myriad of reasons (access to funds, critical/audience indifference or early departure dates).

Such an approach also feels more curiosity-friendly, meaning there’s a chance to gain a reasonable overview of film careers you don’t yet know without having to pawn your laptop or car to (re)familiarise yourself with the, well, familiar. Of course, audience access could be widened further with the careful deployment of ticket multi-buys and other audience-focused incentives (we’ve ranted about this before and will again…), but you can’t always have everything.

Against the backdrop of these issues – but principally because her films are always unique and wonderful – our featured attraction of the month goes to THE CINEMA OF JESSICA HAUSNER at BFI Southbank (FEB) where you’ll find a healthy offering of 35mm screenings. We also really like the look of HER LENS, HIS STORY: FEMALE DIRECTORS & MASCULINITIES which starts towards the end of the month at Barbican (26 FEB to 10 MAR) and makes for an interesting companion piece. Our special mention of the month goes to HAPPINESS IS A STATE OF MIND: JOY & DESPAIR IN JAPANESE CINEMA, the Japan Foundation’s touring film programme at ICA (31 JAN to 16 FEB).

And, finally, we’ll try to put together a special edition screen guide for all you helpless (anti-)romantics this Valentine’s/Galentine’s Day (but no promises!).

See you in darkness…

Richard – Barker-in-Chief, RADIANT CIRCUS
