SCREEN GUIDE: Films in London this week [11 to 17 MAY 2018]

RADIANT CIRCUS is your all-inclusive guide to London’s DIY, indie & alternative movie nights, film events & gallery screenings. Our latest SCREEN GUIDE helps you find films in London this week*.

FRI 11 // SAT 12 // SUN 13 // MON 14 // TUE 15 // WED 16 // THU 17

Welcome to our digest of films in London this week.

There must be something in the water as silent cinema has a really strong showing this week with exceptional events at Barbican, ArtHouse, Genesis, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Stow Film Lounge as well as a modern variant at Deptford Cinema. If you haven’t thought that silent film might be your thing, read the first part of our recent interview with Michelle Facey of Kennington Bioscope: her enthusiasm is absolutely infectious, particularly for the emotional power of live accompaniment.

As well as some excellent double bills there a few “before & after” programming coincidences. First up is the opportunity to see 42ND STREET and its sort-of sequel THE GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 on the same day on different screens (16 MAY, Regent Street & BFI). To confuse matters, the song “We’re In The Money” appears in the opening sequence of the latter but was then appropriated for the Broadway production of the former… Then there’s a brace of classic Italian zombie-outbreak movies CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD and BURIAL GROUND (12 MAY, The King & Queen) which you can follow with excellent post-zombie movie – and we don’t mean that in a chin-stroking way – THE CURED (13 to 17 MAY, Prince Charles).

Oddly enough, a stray song and the forces of life come together in our featured attraction of the week: Bertrand Mandico’s THE WILD BOYS which gets its UK premiere (plus Skype Q&A) on The Mall (11 MAY). We’re big fans of William S. Burroughs’ novel The Wild Boys: A Book Of The Dead – about “a homosexual youth movement whose objective is the downfall of western civilization, set in an apocalyptic late twentieth century” (wikipedia) – and have longed for a film version after earlier failed attempts. Yes, that Duran Duran song hails from somewhere…

What are you going to see?

THE MONKEES’ HEAD + LIVE MUSIC by Nathan Persad at Genesis Cinema (11 MAY 19:00 – Free!):

  • Shortly after their TV show closed its final curtain, the Monkees took to the big screen in this mind-bending experiment in pop art. Proudly without plot, this feature follows band members Peter Tork, Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith on a trippy adventure through 1960s Hollywood.

SERPENTINE CINEMA with artists Sondra Perry & Cauleen Smith at Peckhamplex (11 MAY 18:30):

THE WILD BOYS aka Les garçons sauvages + Skype Q&A with actor Mathilde Warnier at ICA (11 MAY 18:30):

  • The UK premiere of the debut feature film by French experimental filmmaker Bertrand Mandico. “Fantasy, eroticism, violence and mystery engulf a group of young, privileged teenage boys – all played by women – cast away from the island of La Réunion for committing a sadistic crime.”
  • THE WILD BOYS then enjoys a grind show run at ICA (until 17 MAY – click for dates/times).

AFTER ’68 at The Whitechapel & Close-Up (12 MAY 13:00 & 20:00):

  • Part 2: THERE ARE THREE WAYS TO RESIST BUT THE ENEMY IS ONE at Close-Up.

MANSFIELD 66/67 + Q&A with directors P. David Ebersole & Todd Hughes at ICA (12 MAY 18:15):

  • Jayne Mansfield, an early Playboy Playmate, nightclub entertainer and singer, captivated audiences across the globe. Her mid-century rise to stardom drove her to drugs, alcohol, and a dubious affair with Anton LaVey, the charismatic leader of the Church of Satan. A fatal car crash in 1967 unleashed a litany of conspiracies. Was it a curse? Did the devil make her do it?
  • MANSFIELD 66/67 also enjoys a grind show run at ICA (11 to 17 MAY – click for dates/times).

Decried by many as immoral and tasteless, it was defended by critic Joan Didion, who described it as a ‘profoundly affecting film’, ‘suffused with the despair of an America many of us prefer not to know.’

SUFFRAGETTE + MARCH + INTRO with live accompaniment at ArtHouse Crouch End (13 MAY 19:30):

  • The film is introduced by Dr Naomi Paxton, a specialist in the cultural history of suffrage theatre. Live accompaniment is provided by Wendy Hiscocks. The feature is paired with the documentary MARCH which shows Anna Birch’s public art project recreating a Suffragette pageant procession.

BRIGHTON: SYMPHONY OF A CITY + Q&A with director Lizzie Thynne & composer Ed Hughes at Deptford Cinema (15 MAY 19:00):

  • This modern take on the ‘city symphony’ is a striking portrait of Brighton in all its campaigning and bohemian glory set to a sumptuous orchestral score. Bohemian and activist pasts and presents cross-fade; the everyday and the carnivalesque are thrown into relief by the textures, rhythms and tones of music and montage.

THE GRIFTERS 35mm + Q&A with director Stephen Frears, DoP Oliver Stapleton & editor Mick Audsley at The Prince Charles (15 MAY 18:15):

  • When small-time cheat Roy Dillon (John Cusack) winds up in hospital following an unsuccessful scam, it sets up a confrontation between his estranged mother Lilly (Anjelica Huston) and alluring girlfriend Myra (Annette Bening). • Join Screen25 during Mental Health Awareness Week for a special screening of IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY, in partnership with Off The Record and Young People Insight (YPI). “Poignant and life-affirming, this 2010 hit comedy confronts preconceptions about mental health and explores the reality of depression through the eyes of a 16-year-old.”

GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 + INTRO by Lucy Bolton at BFI Southbank (16 MAY 18:20):

  • A musical from and for the Great Depression. The plot (such as it is) sees songwriter Brad Roberts (Powell) defy his rich family in courting chorine Polly (Keeler); meanwhile Al Dubin and Harry Warren’s songs and Busby Berkeley’s weird, wonderful and suggestive choreography boast a dollars-clad Rogers singing ‘We’re in the Money’ and a bleak parade of jobless ex-soldiers trudging through ‘My Forgotten Man.’

REGULAR RUNS & MAINSTREAM MARVELS (by title)

Radiant Circus Screen Guide - Films in London this week: THE CURED at The Prince Charles.
Films in London this week: THE CURED at The Prince Charles.

THE CURED at The Prince Charles (13 to 17 MAY):

  • First time director David Freyne shows there’s plenty of life in the undead yet with a startling new horror film. THE CURED dares to ask: what would the return to normal life be like after a zombie outbreak has been tamed? What follows is a ruthless study of a society still in free fall as one terror is rapidly replaced by another. Human nature, it seems, is our own worst enemy.
  • Read our RADIANT CIRCUS writeup from last year’s London Film Festival.

THE POETESS at DocHouse (11 to 17 MAY):

  • In 2010, Saudi Arabian writer and activist Hissa Hilal did something unimaginable – she starred in the Arab World’s biggest televised live poetry competition. Storming through the rounds, and becoming progressively more political in her critique of religious extremism and her patriarchal society, Hilal became the first woman to reach the show’s final.

REVENGE at ArtHouse Crouch End (11 to 17 MAY):

  • Left for dead by her boyfriend and his alpha-male friends in the remote desert, Jen rises like a phoenix to enact the bloodiest revenge possible.
