MAMA COLONEL at CentrE17 (12 OCT 19:00):

  • Last Frame Club presents: Colonel Honorine Manyole, commonly known as ‘Mama Colonel’ works for the Congolese police force and heads the unit for the protection of minors and the fight against sexual violence. Through the portrait of this brave and tenacious woman, this film addresses the issue of violence towards women and children in the DRC and the difficulty of overcoming the past war.

SINK + Q&A with writer/director Mark Gillis at Peckhamplex (12 OCT 20:30):

  • SINK is a feature film, shot mainly in South East London, written and directed by Mark Gillis. It’s about Micky Mason, a skilled manual worker who, since the Crash, can find nothing but menial zero hours jobs. He takes a course of action that is completely out of character, but it’s the only way he can see of keeping his family together.

  • Sean McAllister returns to his hometown, Hull, as curator of its UK City of Culture opening. Back living with his 90-year-old parents and reflecting on changes to a city hit by cuts and divided by Brexit, Sean is drawn to the fringes of town where he encounters Steve – a struggling warehouse worker with a love for hip hop.

A VERY CARIBBEAN POT + PANEL with director Timuchin Dindjer at Lexi Cinema (13 OCT 15:00):

  • Premiere of a new doc which recounts stories from people who were part of the Windrush generation. The film, made down the road from the Lexi, records the stories of people who came to London from the Caribbean in the period 1950 – 1980. It is based on testimony from people at the Pepper Pot Social Centre in Ladbroke Grove.

Blinking Buzzards: Quarterly meeting of the UK Buster Keaton Society at The Cinema Museum (13 OCT 16:00):

  • The UK Buster Keaton Society presents: The society dedicated to the appreciation of the silent comedian. The last meeting of the year is a request session, so expect to see beloved gems chosen by Society members.

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME + LIVE ORGAN by David Hinit at Christ Church Southgate (13 OCT 19:30):

  • Talkies Community Cinema presents: In 15th-century Paris, Jehan (Brandon Hurst), the evil brother of the archdeacon, lusts after a Gypsy named Esmeralda (Patsy Ruth Miller) and commands the hunchback Quasimodo (Lon Chaney) to capture her. Military captain Phoebus (Norman Kerry) also loves Esmeralda and rescues her, but the Gypsy is not unsympathetic to Quasimodo’s condition, and an unlikely bond forms between them.

PARABLE FOR THE RETURN + INTRO by filmmaker Juan Soto at Birkbeck Cinema (13 OCT 14:00):

  • Juan Soto who will present two recent works PARABLE OF THE RETURN (2016) and TOO LATE FOR THE CINEMA (2014). Juan is a London based filmmaker and editor from Colombia whose works poetically explore intersections of memory and history.

  • Founded in 1993 by the late Marc Karlin and a collective of key independent film-makers, thinkers, writers and activists associated with the golden age of the early radical Channel 4, Vertigo magazine established itself as a key reference for the discussion of film culture and history.   • Worlds collide when Ellie, a 40-something Viennese gallery owner crashes into Alec, a 24 year old human trafficking victim trapped in Vienna.   • In this important documentary by Sergei Kachkin, three former political prisoners tell the story of their imprisonment in the “Perm-36” prison camp, one of the last camps to be closed in Soviet times. Witches and Witchfinders: Sorcery and counterculture in the films of Michael Reeves at The Horse Hospital (17 OCT 19:30):

  • Speaker: Virginie Sélavy. Best known for his savage tale of religious persecution WITCHFINDER GENERAL (1968), director Michael Reeves only completed three feature films in his short life. Despite this, he remains a hugely influential figure of 1960s British cinema, and a singular voice in the countercultural context of the time.
