NEWS FROM ACROSS LONDON’S ALTERNATIVE CINEMA SCENE.

Firstly, apologies for the absence of listings last week. RADIANT CIRCUS was involved in a filmmaking project which involved 10 intensive days of location shoots outside of Berlin. We’ll share more news about that sideshow project as it gathers pace… Catching up with regular life, this week’s listings will be both a little late and slightly more pared-back than usual. Sorry!

Whilst away from our regular listings post, we did note some seriously sad screen news in-between takes. The recent fire at The Lexi Cinema is a reminder of the inherent fragility of all things we value. We can only wish the team there well for a speedy return to business after such a long time in shutdown.

The re-closure of Peckhamplex makes for equally upsetting reading. According to their newsletter and web posts, the initial flurry of interest in TENET did not translate into sustained audiences, and business became too tight to sustain. Here’s some of the statement from their website:

Unfortunately, the film distributors that we rent our films from are constantly re-scheduling the big titles to further and further away. Cinemas across the country have been impacted in the same way. As an independently run cinema remaining open is simply not viable with such low levels of audience admissions and we are determined to eke out our resources, looking after our 40 employees, so that we can bounce back and welcome you for the long term. (John Reiss, Chairman, Peckhamplex Ltd).

Whilst Peckhamplex looks likely to remain dark until Bond in November, it’s clear we cannot rely on great white screen saviours to sustain our fragile exhibition industries. The UK government’s 6 month timeframe for their latest lockdown measures and daily reporting of spiking infection rates across London look set to keep unreleased films on the shelf and audiences at home for a long while longer.

Whilst we were away, much-loved arthouse Close-Up Cinema launched their very own version of ‘cinema on demand’. Reducing their private hire rates, you can now book a cinema screening for your friends and loved ones. As other venues continue to prepare for their reopenings, it’s clear that a combination of old-school showmanship and further stimulation from the commercial sector and Treasury will be required if independent exhibitors are to survive. We published details of how audiences could support their favourite venues during shutdown and will update this list as needed.

Earlier in the autumn we were getting ready to launch our own DIY scheme to support alternative screen culture in London. Sadly, our well-made plans were undone when a valued venue partnership became untenable due to the COVID-19 trading conditions. We’ll review and make further announcements when and if we can…

IF WE HAD TO SEE JUST ONE EVENT THIS WEEK, IT WOULD BE…

This is the week when a most unusual BFI London Film Festival opens online and at venues across London and the UK. Significantly reduced in scale, this year’s event serves as both a national celebration of film and a rallying cry to support independent cinemas across the land. And that’s a very good thing.

Our Featured Attraction Of The Week is therefore Steve McQueen’s MANGROVE (2020) which both opens the festival and gives an opportunity to mark Black History Month, the subject of screenings and mini seasons across town throughout October. Venue screenings are pretty much looking SOLD OUT everywhere but that’s no reason not to celebrate. We’ll try to post a guide to tickets you can still get for the festival over the weekend.

See you in darkness,

RADIANT CIRCUS

  • BIMI presents: “This event is presented in partnership by Bertha DocHouse and Birkbeck University, bringing you some of the best events from this year’s disrupted Essay Film Festival 2020. Marking a return for Professor Laura Mulvey to questions of film theory and feminism, as well as a reconsideration of new and old film technologies, her new book Afterimages (published by Reaktion Books Ltd.) is essential reading for anyone interested in the power and pleasures of moving images.”

AMATEURS aka Amatörer d. Gabriela Pichler, 2018 at BFI Southbank (03 OCT 14:30):

  • “Winner of the Best Nordic Film at the Gothenberg Film Festival, AMATEURS is a fun, family-oriented movie about filmmaking… with a subversive twist. When a fictional Swedish province tries to lure a German discount supermarket chain by commissioning a commercial video, two immigrant girls take out their selfie sticks and smartphones to tell the real story of class divisions and racial prejudice.”
  • Part of: REDEFINING REBELLION (see REP. SEASONS).

SOUTHERN JOURNEY (REVISITED) d. Rob Curry & Tim Plester, 2020 + director Q&A hosted by Stewart Lee at Rio Cinema (04 OCT 15:00):

  • “Exploring the sounds and history of the southern United States, SOUTHERN JOURNEY (REVISITED) is both a music documentary and a road movie. Set against the incendiary backdrop of the 2018 mid-term elections, and accompanied by a glorious soundtrack of blues and bluegrass, hollers and spirituals, the film retraces the route of an iconic song-collecting trip from the late 1950s – Alan Lomax’s so-called “Southern Journey” – seeking out echoes of the past and clues to the future.”

THE SPY WHO LOVED ME d. Lewis Gilbert, 1977 at Olympic Studios (04 OCT 13:40):

  • “James Bond (Roger Moore), in his tenth screen outing, joins forces with a glamorous Russian spy (Barbara Bach) to outwit a megalomaniac shipping magnate (Curt Jurgens) who intends to achieve world domination by causing nuclear war between the superpowers. The film features the submersible Lotus Esprit, underwater battles, and ‘Jaws’, a seven-foot villain with steel teeth.”

PARASITE d. Bong Joon-ho, 2019 at Dalston Roof Park (05 OCT 19:00):

  • Deeper Into Movies presents: “Winner of the Palme d’or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, this brilliant black comedy follows the Kim family as they struggle to survive on the breadline. PARASITE is both a piercing commentary on inequality and a rollercoaster ride with a pleasingly twisty narrative; a compelling and expertly-crafted gem.”

SAINT MAUD d. Rose Glass, 2019 preview at Everyman Screen On The Green & Crystal Palace (06 OCT 21:00):

  • MASSIVE presents: “BAFTA and Tony Award-winner Jennifer Ehle and rising star Morfydd Clark come together in this dark psychological horror when live-in nurse Maud (Clark) arrives at the home of Amanda (Ehle), a famous dancer now frail from illness and trapped in her grand, isolated house.”

HALLELUJAH d. King Vidor, 1929 Online event (06 OCT 19:45):

  • Sands Films Cinema Club presents: “Join us to discover King Vidor’s first sound film, HALLELUJAH (1929), which would remain the finest American film musical until the Astaire-Rogers SWING TIME (1936). Its rich use of Negro spirituals and work-songs underscores an absorbing theme: the role of evangelism in exploiting and channeling pain, disappointment and unease in the American landscape.”

SOUTHERN JOURNEY (REVISITED) d. Rob Curry & Tim Plester, 2020 + director Q&A at Genesis Cinema (06 OCT 18:30):

  • “Exploring the sounds and history of the southern United States, SOUTHERN JOURNEY (REVISITED) is both a music documentary and a road movie. Set against the incendiary backdrop of the 2018 mid-term elections, and accompanied by a glorious soundtrack of blues and bluegrass, hollers and spirituals, the film retraces the route of an iconic song-collecting trip from the late 1950s – Alan Lomax’s so-called “Southern Journey” – seeking out echoes of the past and clues to the future.”

BEYOND THE VISIBLE: HILMA AF KLINT d. Halina Dyrschka, 2019 Online Preview + Q&A with the director (07 OCT 20:30):

  • Birds’ Eye View Reclaim The Frame presents: “Hilma af Klint was an abstract artist before the term existed. A visionary, trailblazing figure who, inspired by spiritualism, modern science, and the riches of the natural world around her, began in 1906 to reel out a series of huge, colorful, sensual, strange works without precedent in painting. Director Halina Dryschka’s dazzling documentary shows not only the life and craft of af Klint, but also the skewing of the history of art that would leave her astounding ouevre out of the narrative of artistic progress for so long.”

RIPTIDE – A SCHIZOPHRENIA LOVE STORY d. Tim Barrow, 2019 + Q&A with the director at Genesis Cinema (07 OCT 18:30):

  • “A Scottish schizophrenia love story road movie, that premiered at the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival in July. Jacob leaves psychiatric hospital and attempts to resume his life in Edinburgh. Frustrated by a banal existence, he heads to the Highlands in search of adventure. By the sea he meets the charismatic Eva who claims to be the daughter of Ingmar Bergman. They set off on adventures.”

HOUSE PARTY: WHEN HARRY MET SALLY d. Rob Reiner, 1989 at Everyman Cinemas (08 OCT – various venues).

  • “Our House Party series continues with this iconic 80s romantic comedy. Harry and Sally have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship. Pizza and a glass of wine or beer are included in the price. Never has there been a better moment to have what she’s having!”
