SCREEN GUIDE: What’s on in London this week [27 AUG to 02 SEP 2021]

Our RADIANT CIRCUS guide to what’s on in London this week across DIY, indie & alternative cinema, including one-off screen events, film seasons, film festivals & new releases.

By RADIANT CIRCUS // Twitter @radiantcircus / Instagram @radiantcircus / #ReviveTheDark

It’s time for RADIANT CIRCUS to take a short break, so please accept this abbreviated screen guide (indoor & outdoor seasons only!) as a quick place holder until full listings return next week (03 SEP). I won’t be far away as, in the guise of my queer horror alter ego TOKEN HOMO, I will be attending my first ever Arrow Frightfest. Which explains why I’ve also chosen a film from their packed lineup for my Featured Attraction of the Week

It’s a week including some new seasons, including runs dedicated to Denis Villeneuve and Richard Pryor and a celebration of 50 years of the National Film & Television School at BFI Southbank. We’ll be posting our usual epic roundup of September’s new seasons next week.

The other thing that I’ll be doing while I’m away will be to edit a new zine, CRISIS?, about the emergency screen culture that emerged during shutdown. The first 40 arrivals at WunderKammer Live will get a free copy. I’ve just finished booking the surprise feature film for that event and whilst I’m jittery about my capacity to keep a secret all the way to the big reveal, it’s a wonderful way to wrap the night.

With so many events coming up that RADIANT CIRCUS has had a hand in, here’s a quick roundup:

As usual, thank you for all your support and I look forward to seeing you in the darkness again soon. If you’re at Frightfest, don’t forget to goose me in the dark and say hi. I’ll be lingering somewhere along Row F…

GAIA d. Jaco Bouwer, 2021 at Cineworld Leicester Square (29 AUG 15:30 & 15:55) / Part of Arrow Frightfest.

  • “On a surveillance mission in a primordial forest, a park ranger encounters two survivalists following a post-apocalyptic lifestyle. The boy and his philosophical father seem to have their own religion, and a mysterious relationship to nature. There are many suspicious aspects to their existence, but when the cabin is attacked by strange, post-human beings one night, she learns that there is an even greater threat in this emergent wilderness. Blending ancient pagan mythologies with modern technophobia, this eco-horror fantasy, engaging the burning issues of our time, incorporates old ideas in new ways to create something both familiar and fresh.”
