For those of us that love independent cinema away from the expensive boutique chains, it seems the venues we frequent are never far away from the threat of closure. Despite all the positive news stories of government grant funding for cinemas during and after the COVID shutdown, and the weekly tales of recovery and revival, the pressing economic realities of keeping alternative venues open continue to loom large.

The Cinema Museum in South London has been fighting for survival ever since the site it sits on was sold by the South London & Maudsley NHS Trust, and the new owners – property developers Lifestory (née Anthology) – have yet to declare their hand. It seems time has now come to complete a deal if one is possible and the venue needs all the support it can get to show its value and worth to everyone who loves moving images.

Organisers of the ‘Save The Cinema Museum’ campaign have been in touch with an update:

“The Cinema Museum nears the end game in its fight for survival. We have not given up and we mean to win this battle. We intend delivering our petition to ‘Save the Cinema Museum’ to the developers who own the wider site upon which the Museum sits, on November the 5th. Once delivered, a petition is essentially closed – so this is everyone’s last chance. We intend totally smashing our target of 60,000+ signatures and we are just a few hundred short. Please do what you can to help us over the line on this last shove – by signing and sharing on social media. Thanks very much everyone – this will mean so much to us.
