Welcome to the latest eNEWS from RADIANT CIRCUS where we voice our enthusiasm for London’s alternative screen attractions.

This week, we’ve given you fourteen festive days of handpicked highlights from London’s one-off screen events. We also give you a flavour of what’s projecting in the city’s new rep seasons and regular runs.

This bumper edition is our last major post of the year, and what a year it has been! RADIANT CIRCUS grew from audience activism, and we have made it our mission to make it easier to find the adventurous moving pictures on London’s alternative cinema screens. We’ll be back in 2019 with more listings, more new writing and more collaborations with London’s indie promoters. Featured attraction: HAVE YOU SEEN MY MOVIE? at ICA (29 DEC to 09 JAN): “This debut feature by Paul Anton Smith is a sprawling collage of clips obtained from hundreds of films which cumulatively explore the ritual of film-going. Smith, who worked with Christian Marclay on THE CLOCK (2010), was determined to make ‘a montage from existing footage that could feel like something else, something mine.’”

SHAFT + DJs at Regent Street Cinema (21 DEC 19:30):

  • Soul Jazz Records continues its Blaxploitation classic film screenings at Regent Street Cinema with this rare screening of the classic SHAFT (1971) on a fantastic 35-mm print!

STAN & OLLIE + SHORT: THE MUSIC BOX at Picturehouse Central (22 DEC 15:30 – Other Picturehouses available!):

  • This screening starts with Laurel and Hardy’s classic short film THE MUSIC BOX, which depicts the pair trying (and failing hilariously) to move a piano up a large flight of steps. Then, Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly are star as the legendary movie icons in STAN & OLLIE.

THE TRICYCLE THIEF + THE CHILDREN’S FILM FOUNDATION STORY at Mirth, Marvel & Maud (23 DEC 14:15):

  • Stow Film lounge presents the world premiere of a new film made in Walthamstow over the summer and features a cast from the Borough. Also, a doc about the Children’s Film Foundation, a government-funded, non-profit-making organisation that made films for children in the UK from 1951 to the mid 1980s.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE at ArtHouse Crouch End (24 DEC 16:00 & 17:30 – Other venues available!):

  • One of the most popular and enduring films ever made, Frank Capra’s IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE is a gloriously sentimental testament to homely small-town moral values.

HAPPY FEET at JW3 (25 DEC 12:00):

  • In the great nation of Emperor Penguins, deep in Antarctica, you’re nobody unless you can sing – which is unfortunate for Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood), who is the worst singer in the world. He is born dancing to his own tune…tap dancing.

THE DARK CRYSTAL at The Prince Charles (26 DEC 17:45 – £1 PCC Members Screening):

  • Another world, another time… in the Age of Wonder. From genius filmmaker Jim Henson comes the fantastical story of THE DARK CRYSTAL. A milestone in fantasy filmmaking, fantastical story of THE was co-directed with Frank Oz (Little Shop of Horrors, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) and produced by Gary Kurtz (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back) universe.

  • Terror Vision presents: One of the grubbiest of all 80s slashers, William Lustig’s visceral shocker about a disturbed psychopath stalking the New York streets for unsuspecting female victims has lost none of its power to provoke and unsettle.

TAKE TWO: KAREL ZEMEN: THE FABULOUS BARON MUNCHAUSEN + INVENTION FOR DESTRUCTION at Close-Up (27 DEC 19:00 + 28 DEC 19:00):

  • “In this delightfully imaginative mix of live action and animation, pirates kidnap a professor to steal his formula for explosives and take over the world. Czech legend Karel Zeman brings his 19th-century Jules Verne tale to life as if it’s a book with engraved illustrations, using live sets, stop-motion, cel animation, and matte backgrounds”

Close-Up New Year’s Eve: THE LAST MOVIE at Close-Up (31 DEC 20:30):

  • “We’re thrilled to mark the last day of the year with Dennis Hopper’s radical, much-mythologised lost masterpiece The Last Movie – widely unseen for nearly 50 years. Join us in the bar to celebrate in the good company of film, drinks and music until late.”

GASLIGHT (1940) at BFI (01 JAN 16:10):

  • Despite MGM’s attempts to dispose of it so as not to rival their lavish remake four years later, Thorold Dickinson’s GASLIGHT thankfully survives. Newlyweds Paul and Bella arrive at a house that has been empty for years, having previously been the scene of a murder, and it soon becomes clear to Bella that her new home has been vacant for good reason. GASLIGHT has a sense of menace that enthrals throughout.

  • When a princess is shrunken by an evil wizard, Sinbad must undertake a quest to an island of monsters to cure her and prevent a war.

LA BELLE ET LA BETE (1946) 35mm at The Prince Charles (03 JAN 18:20):

  • The story of a gentle-hearted beast in love with a simple and beautiful girl. She is drawn to the repellent but strangely fascinating Beast, who tests her fidelity by giving her a key, telling her that if she doesn’t return it to him by a specific time, he will die of grief. She is unable to return the key on time, but it is revealed that the Beast is the genuinely handsome one.

  • ONE CUT OF THE DEAD is something completely different! Starting off with a non-stop one-take 37 minute shot, the film then completely switches direction and turns the zombie genre completely upside down into a charming, audience-friendly comedy!

1985 at Rio Cinema (21 DEC to 03 JAN):

  • Christmas, Texas 1985. A pivotal moment in Queer history is brilliantly captured in a seasonal tale of empathy, love and family set against the background of the beginnings of the AIDS crisis.

THE FAVOURITE at Barbican (01 to 10 JAN):

  • Yorgos Lanthimos (THE LOBSTER, THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER) returns with a sharp-tongued romp through 18th century England with Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone at their wicked best.

THE GREEN FOG at DocHouse (21 DEC to 01 JAN):

  • An emerald hue hangs over the city of San Francisco. Compiled exclusively from film and television shows shot in San Francisco, Guy Maddin and his co-directors Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, have constructed a film that enigmatically mirrors Hitchcock’s Vertigo, and its all-consuming male gaze.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS at The Lexi Cinema (21 DEC to 03 JAN):

  • It’s 25 years after Mary Poppins descended on the Banks’ household to dispense wisdom and wit leavened with magic and music. The children are now adults and grappling with problems of their own.
