This is a text block for the section: SCREEN NEWS - NEWS FROM ACROSS LONDON'S ALTERNATIVE CINEMA SCENE.
NEWS FROM ACROSS LONDON’S ALTERNATIVE CINEMA SCENE.

… And we’re back partying like it’s 2019 with the same-day reopening of Curzon Mayfair & Curzon Richmond projecting a full slate of backed-up features from last year. It’s not often that we get reopened cinemas and a brand new venue, but we welcome Everyman Chelsea to our listings for the first time and wish the crew well for the future!

If you have a car – or suitable friends with a suitable vehicle – the folk behind Rooftop Film Club have announced their August season at their Drive In Film Club. We like the look of STAR WARS: EPISODE IV – A NEW HOPE (07 AUG) and the (un)original FRIDAY THE 13TH (14 AUG). We thought they’d put the breaks on last week, but Luna Drive In Cinema is programming to the end of this screen week at their South London venue, Printworks.

In streaming, TASHKENT FILM ENCOUNTERS: Classic Cinema from Central Asia is a new season from Kino Klassika Foundation curated by Saodat Ismailova (21 JUL to 18 AUG). Like the equally brilliant Queer East Docs4Pride, each film will be FREE to stream online for a week. The current offering is SELKINCHEK d. Aktan Abdykalykov, 1993 (21 to 28 JUL). Further programme details to follow…

Barbican: Cinema On Demand is a new streaming service offering “a selection of independent new release films, exclusive one-off titles and curated film seasons”. This is a paid service where you get 48hrs to watch each film after buying your ticket (‘hires’ are priced from £5 to £10). Current titles (online until 07 AUG) include THE JUNIPER TREE (d. Nietzchka Keene, 1990) and RETABLO (d. Alvaro Delgado Aparicio, 2017) which opens this week (24 JUL+).

We’re limiting our colour palette for this week’s cinema choices, with the reopened Curzon Cinemas offering an exclusive chance to see PARASITE BLACK-AND-WHITE (see daily listings). We love PARASITE but whilst the monochrome treatment brought THE MIST to life, it rather flattened MAD MAX FURY ROAD… Let’s see!

For our featured attraction of the week, we make an unexpected return to Fay Wray and the big ape that started at least one of our unhealthy editorial obsessions… CINÉ-REAL will be live streaming a 16mm projection of KING KONG (1933) from an otherwise dark and empty Castle Cinema (30 JUL). There’s a podcast too…

Ümit and Liam of CINÉ-REAL have been responsible for some of our most memorable screen encounters of recent years. TEXAS CHAIN SAW on Super 8mm was like the most toxic home movie imaginable. Then there was the unforgettable night when Ümit had to hand spool almost the entire last reel of E.T. onto the floor… Given such dramas, it’s a shame we can’t be there, but following Ken Bioscope’s FOUR SQUARE STEVE and Women & Cocaine’s BLACK MOON, Fay Wray fans wouldn’t be anywhere else.

See you in darkness again soon,

RADIANT CIRCUS
