TAKE 2: LUXURY BUILDS

Changing communities and the wide-reaching impacts of gentrification are perennial themes for short documentary storytelling. Our next brace of recommendations looks at the rise of new luxury buildings in established neighbourhoods.

Our first recommendation is CONCRETE TIMES (2018, 19mins) by Lucia Kašová which screens as part of the JOURNEYS strand and is in competition in the UNCONVENTIONAL STORYTELLING award (sponsored this year by RADIANT CIRCUS).

Captured with stunning colour-coded cinematography, this is an explorations of two worlds in one place, where the emergence of a new luxury high rise apartment complex – the tallest building in Bratislava’s new city centre comes complete with residents that look like they’ve just stepped out of the Jetsons – sits starkly alongside the traditional industries and their workforce. Watch this one on as big a screen as you can.

Our second recommendation, also in competition for the UNCONVENTIONAL STORYTELLING award and streaming in that strand, is FUNDAMENTS by Peter Cerovšek (2019, 23mins).

Hailing from nearby Slovenia, this is superficially another account of a luxury building going up and the changes it has on the neighbourhood. But the films takes an unexpected twist… Imagine a reverse REAR WINDOW where the interesting action takes place off camera as we observe a luxury hotel being built from a young couple’s kitchen window. As one world rises….
