Welcome to a new epic roundup of the month’s rep cinema seasons and film festivals in London.
I think I’ve got most of everything listed, but you never know… Certainly, expect more film festivals to be added as the month unfolds, but there’s quite an exciting bunch here already. Strong festival openings this month include ICA’s Frames Of Representation (dedicated to foregrounding “transgressive, unruly ‘cinema of the real’”), Queer East Film Festival (which “showcases rarely-seen queer cinema from East and Southeast Asia”), and Tongues On Fire’s UK Asian Film Festival (which celebrates “the richness and vibrancy of South Asian culture, history, arts, storytelling, and self-expression”).
In terms of seasons, I think a lot of the excitement this month hails from Anna Bogutskaya’s exhibition of CRUEL FLESH at BFI, examining the films of the ‘New French Extremity’ movement. Partly because there are some films I’m fascinated by (whilst I’ve never been totally convinced of TROUBLE EVERY DAY, I adore Fabrice du Welz’s THE ORDEAL aka Calvaire but haven’t seen either ROMANCE or IN MY SKIN, both of which gets intros from Catherine Wheatley) and also because so much of it is being shown from 35mm, which will undoubtably add the right kind of texture to these gnarliest of film offerings. Finally, there’s a lot of talent on show and whilst much attention will be paid to Gaspar Noé’s various appearances, my money is on the Q&A with Lucile Hadžihalilović following CARNE + LA BOUCHE DE JEAN-PIERRE.
In other programmes, BFI adds RETURN OF THE OUTSIDER: THE FILMS OF MIKE HODGES to their roster whilst continuing their epic ANIME season (with more engagements at the BFI IMAX) and their Big Screen Classics’ thematic focus on A QUESTION OF FAITH.
The Garden Cinema continues their classic approach to film programming by CELEBRATING SIDNEY POITIER alongside MARLON BRANDO and THE GOLDEN AGE OF FRENCH CINEMA. Ciné Lumière adds a mini season EXPLORE CÔTE D’AZUR to their aquatic odyssey, SEASCAPES: OUR OCEANS ON SCREEN.
The Prince Charles continues their commitment to actor and auteur strands, including DANIEL DAY-LEWIS, TERRENCE MALICK, RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER, and both JOHN CARPENTER and ALFRED HITCHCOCK from 4K. The West End indie has also significantly extended their WORLD OF WONG KAR WAI season (currently booking through to 27 JUL).
Close-Up devotes their May screens to their ESSENTIAL CINEMA series, including another RADIANT CIRCUS favourite, John Waters’ MULTIPLE MANIACS. Catford Mews has consulted their team about their favourite films, creating new season CULTITUDE (of which my pick of the bunch would be Walter Hill’s THE WARRIORS).
The Prince Charles and Everyman Screen On The Green continue to make it easy for audiences to enjoy 35mm (and 70mm at The PCC!) with a strong showing for their SCI-FI MOVIES strand, and Everyman are devoting Saturday lates (and early Wednesday mornings…) to PAUL VERHOEVEN and NICHOLAS CAGE.
And finally, Rooftop Film Club returns to skylines in Peckham and Stratford East.
For reasons that will be entirely obvious, I’m making CRUEL FLESH: FILMS OF THE NEW FRENCH EXTREMITY at BFI Southbank our Featured Attraction of the Month.
See you in the darkness, and stay safe,
Richard // RADIANT CIRCUS
CRUEL FLESH: FILMS OF THE NEW FRENCH EXTREMITY at BFI Southbank
“French cinema is not usually associated with extreme violence or graphic sex, yet here we are, celebrating the unique moment in cinema history that sent shockwaves through arthouse sensibilities. Generational anger, political frustration and an obsession with intimacy was channeled by a disparate array of filmmakers who shaped it into a new cinema of cruelty. Not all the films of the New French Extremity are horror films, but all are horrifying in their own way. They’re shaped by and fascinated with violence – intimate and societal. These films, at their core, challenge every social norm, breaking them down to their very essence. At their best, the films of the New French Extremity are transcendent; at their worst, they’re brutal.” Anna Bogutskaya, season programmer/BFI.
