MIDNIGHT EXCESS #2: BERRY GORDY’S THE LAST DRAGON / NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIE
MIDNIGHT EXCESS is a new film programme from independent promoter SUPAKINO that brings back the thrill of late night movies and subversive double features to London’s alternative cinema scene.
SUPAKINO and THE CELLULOID SORCERESS
For our second show, SUPAKINO and THE CELLULOID SORCERESS shine a spotlight on the late singer, actor, model VANITY with an action-packed 80s double bill of Motown musical BERRY GORDY’S THE LAST DRAGON (1985) and the UK theatrical premiere of NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIE (1986).
Celebrating VANITY’s varied career from Prince-protégée to action movie star to evangelist, there will be clips, trailers and discussion between the films… plus some surprises!
An exciting and funky spectacle in the tradition of cult late-night movies, we invite you to put on your shoulder pads, bring a date and groove on over to the historic Rio Cinema:
- Box office: now open
- Rio Cinema, 107 Kingsland High St, London, E8
- Saturday 11th May 2019
- From 11pm-3.30am

BERRY GORDY’S THE LAST DRAGON (1985) and NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIE (1986)
Motown mogul Berry Gordy’s kung-fu musical is the ultimate 80s Hollywood excess: a blend of chart hits, young stars, magic powers and the shadow of the great Bruce Lee! THE LAST DRAGON was a smash on release and enjoyed a 30th anniversary revival tour in the US.
After dropping out of PURPLE RAIN to join Motown, VANITY went on to star in several low-budget and direct-to-video action films. Unreleased theatrically in the UK, NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIE remains a cult classic of the VHS-era for its “James Bond Jr” premise and GENE SIMMONS of the rock band KISS as the outlandish hermaphrodite villain!
Both features will be showing in digital format and will be screened uncut for the first time in the UK.
MIDNIGHT EXCESS
Launched by SUPAKINO in 2019, MIDNIGHT EXCESS aims to bring back the thrill of late night movies and subversive double features. Expect a programme of gloriously over-the-top movies, from eye-popping exuberance to the utterly outrageous, and from the downright strange to the outright sexy. MIDNIGHT EXCESS also aims to give a space for indie film clubs and programmers to collaborate and show the type of repertory cinema that wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to be seen again on the big screen.
SUPAKINO
Ranjit S. Ruprai is an independent programmer and supporter of indie cinemas, film festivals and film clubs in London. Since 2017, he has been curating friendly film screenings around fun and unusual themes including Turbans Seen On Screen at The Institute Of Light and Bombay Mix double-bills at Rio Cinema.
