NOW BOOKING: Frames Of Representation at ICA (12 to 20 APR)

Hot on the heels of the Essay Film Festival (22 MAR to 04 APR) comes ICA’s own Frames Of Representation (12 to 20 APR), an annual event dedicated to groundbreaking “cinema of the real” in all its possible forms. Here’s our quick RADIANT CIRCUS guide to what’s on.

Frames Of Representation: Opening Night - What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire? (12 APR).

The ICA’s Frames Of Representation is an annual “showcase for the cinema of the real”. Hot on the heels of the Essay Film Festival, it’s another great destination for fans of alternative, factual filmmaking.

Over nine days, Frames Of Representation will present premieres of twelve full-length features and six shorts, as well as an all-day symposium, a live performance, and a range of masterclasses, talks and workshops.

According to organisers, “deframing” is the concept at the heart of this year’s event which “embraces cultural complexity, resists dominant narratives, and emphasises decategorisation”… We’re not totally sure we know what that means, but the programme as a whole promises “transgressive, unruly cinema” in a “broad and unclassifiable range of works” which totally floats our boat.

PASSES & MULTI–BUYS

Given that we love to list so much, anything that eases the burden is a welcome addition to any festival box office. Frames Of Representation offers the following discounts for anyone who wants to take a deeper dive.

Festival Pass: £135 for all 15 screenings (£100 concs.)

Multi-buy offer: 4 or more screenings: £12 each (£10 concs.)

Multi-buy offer: 9 or more screenings: £10 each (£8 concs.)

N.B. “Please note that multi-buy offers do not include seminars, workshops or other special events. To purchase a multi-buy offer or Festival Pass, please contact the ICA Box Office on 020 7930 3647 (Tuesday – Sunday, 12pm – 9pm).”

SINGLE-O EXHIBIT

If we could see just one (and we’ve cheated a little bit here…) it would be either:

UK PREMIERE Normal + Q&A (18:20 – main featured attraction)

“Adele Tulli’s Normal playfully exposes the spectacle of gender in our everyday lives.”

or, a closing night DIY double of:

FoR Shorts #2: Anteu + Backyard + Tourneur + Q&A (18:00)

“The UK premieres of three shorts by João Vladimiro, Khaled Abdulwahed and Yalda Afsah.”

Closing Night: UK PREMIERE Present.Perfect. + Q&A (20:15)

“Featuring personal broadcasts from twelve Chinese online streamers, Present.Perfect. allows us to consider the ways in which our identities have become entangled with network technologies.”

Frames of Representation 2019 screens at ICA from 12 to 20 APR 2019.
