Fundraiser HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (d. John Cameron Mitchell, 2001) takes place at Genesis Cinema on THU 25 JUL 21:00. The evening includes an exhibition of outsider protest paraphernalia, a queer info and creator marketplace and a performance from self-confessed Hedwig fan, Wanda Cookie, as well as the usual Genesis cocktail of music, beverages and pizza.
Celebrating the ‘outsider’ subcultures that queer communities have pioneered – creating their own cultural spaces on the fringes of a homophobic and heteronormative society – Fringe! tell us the evening will be “putting the politics back in Pride month”, reminding us all that Pride is a protest started by homeless trans women of colour.
The night is a fundraiser for homelessness organisation The Outside Project which recently opened the UK’s first LGBTQ+ shelter and community centre. Launching in 2017 with a temporary homeless shelter housed in Status Quo’s old tour bus – true story – the Project has gone from strength to strength with support from the community, local authorities and the Mayor Of London to develop into a 24/7, building-based service.
Wanda Cookie is a “soft drag witch and occult songstress” with “an insatiable appetite for theatrical rabble and genial disaster”. Wanda’s a HUGE Hedwig fan, and so excited to be hosting a viewing of one of their favorite movies of all time!
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH d. John Cameron Mitchell, 2001 screens at Genesis Cinema (25 JUL 21:00).
THE RADIANT CIRCUS VIEW
If you haven’t seen HEDWIG before, it contains one of cinema’s greatest queer, rock’n roll performances with John Cameron Mitchell giving a full-throated outsider roar as the character he first created for the Off-Broadway stage. It’s full of the kind of hurt, alienation, anger, and melancholy that haunts many a doomed love affair whilst thrusting itself from the proscenium arches of its theatrical origins to teabag unapologetic queerness in your face. Truly a “post-punk neo-glam rock musical” for the ages.
