Silent classic THE HANDS OF ORLAC (24 JAN) starts a new season of horror screenings at Austrian Cultural Forum, Knightsbridge. And they’re all FREE! Here’s everything you need to know about this small but beautifully formed season of shocks.
When you’re a lover of horror cinema you’re often made to feel like you should be sitting at the back of the cinephile bus… Like you’ve spent too much time pandering to your inner nerd-child or need to find a more woke way of justifying your search for sensation. Even asking a polite question about the absence of ‘horror’ from a list of national film genres at a recent – and otherwise excellent – lecture (if you follow @radiantcircus on Twitter, you’ll know where…) can make you feel like you’ve just started flinging your own shit at the screen like a crazed Bonobo…
Which is why we love it when national cultural institutions flaunt their genre credentials. Austrian Cultural Forum is dedicating their 2019 CineClub screenings to an investigation of the relationship between Austrian cinema and genres of all flavours. Kicking the door down is a series of 5 free screenings (24 JAN to 21 MAR) which see the normally polite venue descend “into the darker spheres of horror, obsession and suspense.”

- “An Austrian silent horror film from 1924 by Robert Wiene who made his name as a director of expressionist films such as THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. When pianist Paul Orlac loses his hands in a railway accident and receives a transplant from a recently executed murderer, he begins to believe that with them he has acquired the murderer’s predisposition to violence.”
