Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fests has launched their QUEER SQUEE season – a series of double bills celebrating LGBTQ+ fandom. Expect insights into the hunt for Judy’s ruby slippers, celebration of the Beyhive and at least one in depth profile of Jodie Foster.
Embrace your film and TV obsessions with this packed programme of delights.
Beyhive Double Bill: WAITING FOR B d. Abigail Spindel & Paulo Cesar Toledo, 2016 + DREAMGIRLS d. Bill Condon, 2006 at Theatre Peckham (30 JUN 18:00):
- Fringe! celebrates the Beyhive – one of the most powerful fan forces on the planet – & Queen Bey with a deliciously diva double bill taking us from queer fans of B camping out for two months to see their queen, to the queen herself making a star turn in the Oscar-winning DREAMGIRLS (we understand that singing along is *strongly* encouraged!).
Jodie Foster: A Butch/Femme Appreciation + Zine Making at Rio Cinema (14 JUL 14:15)
- Why Jodie? “Because Jodie Foster is a queer icon that we were cruising long before she came out, and this afternoon of adoration is okay to go!” The packed lineup includes a queer screen icons zine making workshop in the foyer before the films (don’t worry, you’ll get a chance to finish off in the interval…) and a double bill. JODIE: AN ICON (d. Pratibha Parmar, 1996) is “a fast paced, breezy look at the transatlantic phenomenon that has made Hollywood actress Jodie Foster an icon for lesbians who identify with, adore and celebrate the screen personas of her remarkable career”. CONTACT (d. Robert Zemeckis, 1997) explores the frontiers of science fiction thusly: “after several setbacks (men doubting Jodie, man taking over Jodie’s place to go into space) and a tryst with Christian philosopher Palmer Joss (a soft butch, spiritual Matthew McConaughey) Jodie finally heads down the wormhole to meet the extraterrestrials.”
TV Binge Watch Double Bill: UNITED WE FAN d. Michael Sparaga, 2018 + QUEER SQUEE at Mirth, Marvel & Maud (24 JUL 19:00):
- An evening celebrating the heights of queer TV fandom, the characters and shows we obsess over, and the lengths we’ll go to save them! UNITED WE FAN looks at how ordinary people can save the television shows and television characters they’re obsessed with as well as highlighting the ill-begotten fates and premature gay deaths that have plagued film & TV. After a suitable break, it’s time to settle back, binge & chat about the shows and characters you love including BUFFY, XENA, DEEP SPACE NINE, FIREFLY, SHADOW HUNTERS & THE GOOD WIFE. Introduced by Buffy superfan Dom Top, audience participation is again highly encouraged. Who do you stan?
Judy Judy Judy Double Bill: THE SLIPPERS d. Morgan White, 2016 + THE HARVEY GIRLS d. George Sidney, 1946 at The Cinema Museum (27 JUL 16:00).
- A day of film, performance and chat for the Judy-obsessed. Before each screening spesh guest Crayola the Queen will take you over the rainbow with some very Judy numbers. THE SLIPPERS is “a rare glimpse into the world of the seedy and fabulously obsessive search to own a pair of the true Ruby Slippers and the surprisingly shady, backstabbing world of Hollywood memorabilia collecting”. THE HARVEY GIRLS is the Judy Garland movie musical you probably haven’t seen where Judy is “a mail-order bride whose good girl gang of genteel waitresses face off with the gloriously sequinned bodice-wearing Angela Lansbury’s bad girls of the saloon in an all-singing, all-dancing showdown for a frontier town wrestling to maintain its wild west ways.” You’d be a fool to miss it.
