NOW BOOKING: Splash, Scratch, Dunk! Films Made by Hand at Barbican Cinema (08 JUL to 05 AUG)
Barbican Cinema has announced a short season of experimental films made entirely by hand, without a camera, to accompany their exhibition Dubuffet: Brutal Beauty.

The stranger cinema gets, the more we love it. And, having taken a slide into the mainstream throughout lockdown (we’ll be honest, we didn’t really have the headspace for more challenging works…), this new season at Barbican Cinema is exactly what we’re looking forward to seeing more of.
Splash, Scratch, Dunk! Films Made by Hand projects across four separate events, each showing in Barbican’s Cinema 1 for optimum impact. Tickets are on sale now for the venue’s standard £12 (members’ discounts & concessions are available).
Barbican recently released more capacity for their socially distanced screenings following changes to government guidelines (we had our bookings bumped along the row for Return To The City), so this is starting to look like a return to some kind of crowded house.
Here’s what’s on at Splash, Scratch, Dunk!:
Raw Vision (08 JUL 18:30)
“Dive into a world of colour with this programme of films made by scratching into, painting on, or affixing things to the surface of the filmstrip.”
Troubling the Image (15 JUL 18:30)
“This programme assembles examples of handmade films where photographed footage – mainly found footage – is overpainted, scratched or scraped by the artist.”
Breaking Down (22 JUL 18:30)
“This programme collects films with imagery produced by the artist purposefully eroding the photochemical emulsion on the surface of the filmstrip.”
HAS THE FEATURE STARTED YET? d. Maurice Lemaître, 1951 + Pre-recorded Intro by Professor Nicole Brenez (05 AUG 18:30)
“In this hugely influential handmade film the artist’s interventions on the filmstrip constitute a destructive assault on the material of film itself.”
Splash, Scratch, Dunk! Films Made by Hand screens at Barbican Cinema (08 JUL to 05 AUG) and is booking now.
