OPENING NIGHT: Aperture – Asia & Pacific Film Festival – Part 2

We loved the first part of Aperture earlier this year but – thanks to our hectic summer – had rather lost track of its return. Without any further hesitation, here’s everything you need to know about Part 2 (11 to 15 SEP).

Aperture: Asia & Pacific Film Festival – Part 2 is now booking at various venues across London (11 to 15 SEP 2019).

Aperture: Asia & Pacific Film Festival landed in London earlier this year with an excellent first part (04 to 13 JUN). After a break – including screenings in Newcastle and Manchester – it returns to London from 11 to 15 SEP at Close-Up, DocHouse, Genesis Cinema and The Horse Hospital. The festival then gets back on the road, returning north, this time extending its reach to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Part 2 is focused mostly on documentary filmmaking in Southeast Asia. Things get started today with a free workshop event at Close-Up (11 SEP 12.15) with Singaporean director Daniel Hui and Cambodia based producer Daniel Mattes in conversation, moderated by May Adadol Ingawanij (CREAM, University of Westminster).

Experimental filmmaker Daniel Hui is indeed the focus of this edition of the festival. Hui’s films have been screened at film festivals around the world including Rotterdam, Busan, Yamagata, Doclisboa, FIDMarseille, Singapore and Taipei. He is a founding members of 13 Little Pictures, an independent film collective whose films have garnered critical acclaim internationally.

Aperture Part 2 includes the first full showing of Daniel Hui’s body of work to date which is also the first time any of his work has been shown in the UK. So it’s a rare treat. DEMONS gets its UK premiere at Genesis Cinema (11 SEP 18:30) and is Hui’s only fictional work so far.

According to Sonali Joshi, Founder and Director of festival organisers Day For Night, “Daniel’s signature style embodies an ambiguous blend of documentary and fiction. Intimate and impressionistic, his films interrogate Singapore’s mythic narratives of national history and collective identity and exhibit the director’s longstanding concerns with the history of Singapore’s film industry and the country’s complex class and racial dynamics. An important and distinctive voice in Singaporean cinema and a unique filmmaking talent, we’re thrilled to be hosting Daniel in London for a series of Q&As and talks.”

Aperture Part 2 will also be presenting the world premiere of documentary EYE ON THE BALL by Yih Wen Chen at DocHouse (12 SEP), following the aspirations of the Malaysian youth blind football team. Day For Night were involved in creating audio-description for the film and wanted to bring it to wider audiences in London and across the UK. Director Yih Wen Chen joins them for the screening and Q&A.
