Circus Life: Circus On Screen at Birkbeck Cinema (10 NOV 14:00 – Free!):

  • This special programme of circus-themed films includes a number of short “back stage” documentary pieces about circus life, followed by a 90th anniversary screening of Charlie Chaplin’s 1928 silent classic THE CIRCUS, for which he received a Special Academy Award.

THE DOG ISN’T AFRAID OF FIREWORKS + LAINDON at ICA (10 NOV 18:00):

  • Artists’ Film Club presents: Recent works commissioned by the ICA: Basildon-born artist Marianne Murray’s humorous comment on failed new-town ideals takes the now defunct Laindon Shopping Centre as its subject in LAINDON. Jaf Yusuf’s THE DOG ISN’T AFRAID OF FIREWORKS continues his investigation of place and architecture using 3D animation techniques.

MAGIC MEDICINE + Q&A with director Monty Wates & Dr Robin Carhart-Harris at Rio Cinema (10 NOV 15:30):

  • Over 4 years, filmmaker Monty Wates was given exclusive access to the first ever medical trial to give psilocybin (the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms) to a group of volunteers suffering from clinical depression.

NOSFERATU (1922) + LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT by Aubrey Jackson-Blake & Dan Tye at Phoenix Cinema (10 NOV 22:30):

  • F W Murnau’s 1922 classic with live multi-instrumental score from Aubrey Jackson-Blake (sythesisers and sound manipulation) and Dan Tye (double bass).

  • Multimedia artist Rachel Maclean’s ambitious film unfurls in a seductive and dangerous world where surveillance, violence and submission are a normalised part of daily life. In saccharine pastels, this darkly comic film exposes the heteropatriarchal ideologies embedded in prevailing narratives of gender and beauty.

THE OTHER SIDE OF EVERYTHING at DocHouse (10 NOV 18:30):

  • In Belgrade, an apartment is divided in two by a door, which has been permanently locked for over 70 years. The apartment, which was divided on the order of Yugoslavia’s then communist government, is where director Mila Turajlic’s mother was born, and where Mila grew up herself.

WIDOWS at ArtHouse Crouch End (10 NOV 12:30, 15:45, 18:30 & 21:15):

  • The story of four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities. Set in contemporary Chicago, amid a time of turmoil, tensions build when Veronica (Oscar winner Viola Davis), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez), Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) and Belle (Cynthia Erivo) take their fate into their own hands.
