  • Presented by Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image: Ulrike Ottinger’s epic shows in three chapters over one weekend. The film was inspired by the writings of Adelbert von Chamisso (1781 – 1838), who in 1815 joined the Russian ship Rurikfor in the Romanzow research expedition to the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. Ottinger uses the diaries of Chamisso, as well as those of Georg Wilhelm Steller and Captain James Cook to follow their journeys to ethnic groups living in the coastal areas of the Bering Sea.

  • UK premiere of CJ Obasi’s Afro-futuristic screen adaptation of the award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor’s short story Hello, Moto. The story follows a scientist-witch who, through an alchemical combination of juju and technology, creates wigs which grant her and her friends supernatural powers.

  • Whit Stillman’s 1998 comedy classic documents the decline and fall of the Studio 54-era disco scene in early-1980s Manhattan. Lexi Film School: DAISIES + INTRO by So Mayer at Lexi Cinema (23 JUL 18:30):

  • Boredom, bikinis and a blistering critique of the beauty myth: from its first seconds, Vera Chytilova’s ever-fresh Daisies kicks wickedly against the pricks and feels as if it was made today. An innovative and brilliantly absurd masterpiece of the 60s Czech New Wave, the film was made three years before the Prague Spring but dissent is clearly in the air.

IT HAPPENED HERE + DISCUSSION with co-directors Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo at BFI Southbank (23 JUL 18:00):

  • This extraordinary film – an immensely powerful tale of what might have taken place if the Nazis had invaded Britain in 1940 – was eight years in the making, helped along by financial support from Tony Richardson, whose work BFI celebrated earlier this year. Shot on both 16mm and 35mm with a cast of mainly amateurs, the result is impressively polished and professional. Remastered to mark Kevin Brownlow’s 80th birthday.

A PRAYER BEFORE DAWN + SHORT at Everyman Muswell Hill / King’s Cross (23 JUL 20:15):

  • Based on the memoir by Billy Moore, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s film recounts the visceral journey through hell of a British drug-dealer who is arrested in Bangkok and sentenced to three years in one of Thailand’s most notorious prisons. Accompanied by an exclusive short with the real life subject of the film, Billy Moore, in conversation with rapper and men’s mental health spokesperson, Professor Green.
