Welcome to another screen week!

Two quick stories about the fragility of screen culture…

Firstly, Deptford Cinema is still looking for a permanent home since the volunteer-run venue’s old location became untenable during the pandemic. They have been producing various popup screenings since and from 23 April they will be in residence at The Music Room (New Cross Road SE14) for fortnightly screenings and a free monthly film and book club. The new programme kicks off with ALCARRÀS and THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED (23 APR) and continues with THE GOLDEN DREAM (28 MAY).

Also feeling the longterm social and economic shock of the pandemic, Riverside Studios has announced that the historic venue is now in dire financial straits. They have announced a ‘Rally for Riverside’ fundraising campaign which makes one of their first events my Featured Attraction of the Week: Roy Ward Baker’s 1967 film QUATERMASS AND THE PIT screens with a special conversation between one of its stars Julian Glover and host Gyles Brandreth on Wednesday 12 April.

See you in the darkness, and stay safe.

Rally for Riverside: QUATERMASS AND THE PIT d. Roy Ward Baker, 1967 + Q&A with Julian Glover & Gyles Brandreth (12 APR 18:00).

“A screening of one of Julian Glover’s many notable screen appearances, QUATERMASS AND THE PIT. This, one of Britain’s finest sci-fi films, based on Nigel Kneale’s script about the discovery of ancient alien craft beneath central London, boasts one of the most elaborate screenplays in British cinema. As boffins, army officers and politicians argue over a mysterious object unearthed at a London tube station, Kneale introduces and interweaves numerous narrative threads (scientific, mythic, historical, psychological, religious, etc) to intriguing and increasingly apocalyptic effect.”

The screening will be followed by an ‘in conversation’ between Julian Glover and Gyles Brandreth, when they will discuss Julian’s long, diverse and illustrious career. There will then be the opportunity to meet Julian at an informal book signing in the River Room.
