NEWS FROM ACROSS LONDON’S ALTERNATIVE CINEMA SCENE.

If you’ve been worried about the health of London’s indie cinema scene (and haven’t we all?), it was a relief to see a new funding pot from the National Lottery open up last week. The BFI FAN Film Exhibition Fund “aims to reboot the independent film exhibition sector” and is designed to support real rather than virtual screen events. Applications are open now for film screenings in the period OCT 2020 to MAR 2021 with a total of £88,859 available for projects in London (deadline 30 SEP).

Cinema reopenings continue apace with BFI IMAX bringing its upscale offerings back to Waterloo from 21 AUG with a brace of back catalogue Christopher Nolans. Then comes the long-awaited release of his latest, TENET, triggering a veritable summer fete of reopenings with The Castle Cinema, Electric Cinemas Portobello & White City, Olympic Studios, and Peckhamplex all picking 26 AUG as their chance to return to darkness. Ciné Lumière also returns on 26 AUG but suitably ignores Nolan, opting for THE LOST PRINCE instead (see CINEMA+ LISTINGS, below). Curzons Aldgate and Wimbledon also rejoin the darkness this week, reopening on Monday 24 AUG.

There’s no getting away from TENET which has the power to both reopen venues and clear almost every other film off London’s screens. We’ve listed it at BFI IMAX for optimum impact on IMAX 15/70MM, but you can also see it at Picturehouse Central on 70MM, and The Ritzy, Curzon SohoGenesis Cinema are projecting it from 35MM. Rio Cinema joins the 35MM club from Friday 28 AUG followed by the Barbican when it reopens (now booking 04 to 17 SEP). You can, of course, see it digitally almost everywhere that’s open. For such a wide release, we’ve only listed the celluloid screenings.

Elsewhere, Rio Cinema continues with their blended approach, adding a number of new release titles to their online Rio Player inc: AVA d. Sadaf Foroughi, 2017 // COUP 53 d. Taghi Amirani, 2019 /&/ YOU DON’T NOMI d. Jeffrey McHale, 2019. Another online announcement, Open City Docs has confirmed their full online festival programme (09 to 15 SEP). The lineup looks as exciting as ever, featuring “48 new non-fiction films, 10 cross-media projects, and 3 audio documentaries”.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: Now that we know a bit more about how this screen year is unfolding, we’ll be updating our film festival calendar in the coming weeks. If you’re a festival promoter and have your dates confirmed for the 12 months ahead, please get in touch!]

Looking ahead, BFI has announced another new season as part of its September reopening schedule. AFRICAN ODYSSEYS: INJUSTICE (01 SEP to 06 OCT) features documentaries about “police brutality, racism and injustice experienced by black communities”. The lineup includes: BUS 174 aka Ônibus 174 d. José Padilha & Felipe Lacerda, 2002 (14 SEP & 06 OCT) // THE HARD STOP d. George Amponsah, 2015 (29 SEP & 05 OCT) /&/ MANGROVE NINE d. John La Rose & Franco Rosso, 1973 + THE PEOPLE’S ACCOUNT d. Ceddo Film and Video Workshop, 1985 (09 SEP).

And finally, us horror-heads at RADIANT CIRCUS always get a shudder of excitement when The Prince Charles announces their HORROCTOBER season… (even if it’s difficult to actually say that title out loud…). Films already listed include: GET OUT d. Jordan Peele, 2017 (17 OCT) // HOST d. Rob Savage, 2020 (17 to 22 OCT) /&/ THE THING d. John Carpenter, 1982 (16 to 22 OCT) [UPDATE – the full programme dropped just after we posted…. whilst there aren’t many surprises, it still looks like a fun time in the dark!].

IF WE HAD TO SEE JUST ONE EVENT THIS WEEK, IT WOULD BE…

Our special mention this week goes to our friends at Stow Film Lounge who have launched their outdoor Cycle-In Cinema in the borough of Waltham Forest. Screenings started last week and are now programmed to early September. This week’s exhibits include HOUSE PARTY (21 AUG) and E.T. (22 AUG), and all proceeds from ticket sales will go to Waltham Forest food bank, Eat or Heat. The weather looks pretty dodgy this weekend, so please send the guys some love… (similar vibes to Archlight Cinema who start their outdoor programme this weekend too…).

Now, you might imagine that our highlight of the week would be a certain big movie opening… However, this slot has always been reserved for the single screen event RADIANT CIRCUS would most like to be at. The event that has most captured our imagination and is therefore our Featured Attraction Of The Week is BAD LUCKY GOAT (2017). Presented by The Twelve30 Collective, this FREE online screening and Q&A with director Samir Oliveros continues the collective’s compelling mission to “reframe Caribbean cinema” (see 22 AUG for details).

Of course, this also means we can continue our (minor) cinematic sideline obsession with goats on screen (cf THE WITCH)…

See you in darkness,

RADIANT CIRCUS
