SCREEN GUIDE: What’s on in London this week [21 to 27 JUL 2023]

Our RADIANT CIRCUS guide to what’s on in London this week across DIY, indie & alternative cinema, including one-off screen events, film seasons, film festivals & new releases.

Token Homo’s cult film night Bar Trash continues with MONSTER MAYHEM! at Rule Zero & Genesis Cinema. Booking Now

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… That’s normally the time when special event listings get this thin! With BARBIE and OPPENHEIMER opening almost everywhere, I’ve focussed on detailing their special events and 30/70mm screenings wherever possible.

With August looming, Cine Lumière is heading into their summer closure and I expect DIY/alternative screenings will continue to be quiet whilst Barbenheimer sweeps through town.

As a result of all this, RADIANT CIRCUS will also be going dark for August whilst I undertake some essential maintenance (basically, I need to find a new server to house the site and transfer it without breaking too much…). The last scheduled post will therefore be the AUGUST roundup and then the first in our new home will be our SEPTEMBER roundup. After that, weekly screen guides and daily updates will resume.

Of course, you can also join me in Bar Paragon at Genesis Cinema if you fancy a weekly dose of MONSTER MAYHEM! throughout August. Remaining kaijū season highlights include THE CRATER LAKE MONSTER, KING KONG LIVES, THE BLOB 1988, and GODZILLA 1998.

As always, thank you for all of your support (particularly my monthly subscribers at Patreon). See you in the darkness soon, and stay safe.

TOKYO FIST d. Shinya Tsukamoto, 1995 presented by Cinema Rising at The Garden Cinema (26 JUL 20:15).

“Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto (the Tetsuo franchise, A Snake of June), Tokyo Fist follows Tsuda (played by Tsukamato) a meek insurance salesman whose drab life with his fiancee Hizuru (Kajori Fujii) is disrupted by the reappearance of Kojima (played by Tsukamoto’s brother), an old friend who is now a professional boxer. What follows is an increasingly deranged body horror spectacle, as both men’s insecurities drive them past breaking point. Meanwhile, Hizuru responds by inserting progressively large pieces of metal into her body.”

“A boxing movie only Tsukamato could have made, propelled by a pounding industrial score by Der Eisenrost, Tokyo Fist is an unhinged, gruesome deconstruction of the masculine psyche. Join us in The Garden Cinema bar before the screening for a curated playlist and a Sakura Knockout sake punch, specially designed to accompany this event.” (Cinema Rising)
