SCREEN GUIDE: What’s on in London this week [22 to 28 JUL 2022]
Our RADIANT CIRCUS guide to what’s on in London this week across DIY, indie & alternative cinema, including one-off screen events, film seasons, film festivals & new releases, indoors & out!
By RADIANT CIRCUS // Twitter @radiantcircus / Instagram @radiantcircus
Hi everyone!
I’m taking a short holiday so am cutting down on the number of posts whilst keeping the flagship sailing with these weekly Screen Guides (i.e. no daily updates or IG posts). I’ll still be working on my various screening projects, so I won’t be going quiet exactly, but it’s time to take a short break from being quite so lost in the bowels of WordPress…
I hope subscribers to THE BALLY have been enjoying their full weekly screen guides instead. Normal service to resume next week!
Hope you have a great time at the cinema, and thank you for all your support for the various projects I’m creating at RADIANT CIRCUS and TOKEN HOMO.
See you in the darkness, and stay safe.

The Psycho Sequels: Double-bill of PSYCHO II + PSYCHO III d. Richard Franklin, 1983 + Anthony Perkins, 1986 presented with an introduction & intermission by Queer Horror Nights at The Cinema Museum (24 JUL 18:30 / Bar social from 17:30).
Alfred Hitchcock’s newly restored and uncut PSYCHO (1960) is arguably one of the most influential horror films of all time, a low budget, black and white masterpiece that is now synonymous with the word ‘fear’. But we’re taking a path less well travelled… what Norman Bates did next.
The sequels tell a near-continuous tale of Norman’s misadventures after 22 years in the asylum. Franklin’s film is a well-crafted chiller that brings its own dark humour to proceedings. As Kim Newman puts it, “The wittiest dark joke is that the entire world wants Norman to be mad, and ‘normality’ can only be restored if he’s got a mummified mother in the window” (Empire).
But it’s down to star Anthony Perkins to really turn the dial on the franchise, collaborating with the Coen Brother’s noted tunesmith Carter Burwell (right after BLOOD SIMPLE), to bring a sweaty, overheated atmosphere to the swamp that borders on southern fried melodrama. With Diana Scarwid’s suicidal nun, Norman’s peanut butter taxidermy, Jeff Fahey’s seduction by lamplight, and ‘mother’s’ severed limb on the backseat, there’s an awful lot here to be enjoyed. Just don’t ask for ice…
We’re showing the The Psycho Sequels as part of our Q-RATED! season, a celebration of horror films made by out/queer directors. Whilst we can’t speak for Mr Franklin, Anthony Perkins is much more our cup of tea (& sympathy!).
#QueerHorrorNights is an LGBTQ+ community film club hosted by Token Homo and Last Frame Club. Our Q-RATED! year-long launch season is supported by Film Hub London, managed by Film London. Proud to be a partner of the BFI Film Audience Network, funded by the National Lottery.
