SCREEN GUIDE: What’s on in London this week [26 AUG to 01 SEP 2022]

Our RADIANT CIRCUS guide to what’s on in London this week across DIY, indie & alternative cinema, including one-off screen events, film seasons, film festivals & new releases.

Welcome to another screen week!

I’m at FrightFest all weekend, so my head is even more full of horror than usual…

Plunging right in at the deep end, I’ve chosen the Goethe-Institut’s screening of NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE as my Featured Attraction of the Week. It’s one of my favourite horror shows from a director who is about to celebrate his 80th. If you’ve been paying attention, Herzog is a big reason why RADIANT CIRCUS is called RADIANT CIRCUS… so yeah, consider me a fan…

There are lots of great horror-tinged screenings across London this week. Close-Up shows UNDER THE SKIN as part of their ESSENTIAL CINEMA strand (27 AUG), Sam Enthoven and Arkadiusz Potyka provide a live electronic score for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at ArtHouse Crouch End (28 AUG), THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T gets another nightmare outing at BFI Southbank (30 AUG), Nick Toth introduces MAD MAX: FURY ROAD at Genesis, and there’s a DeafRave presentation of NOPE, also at Genesis (all 30 AUG).

35mm fans can find Wes Craven’s SCREAM at Everyman Screen On The Green (27 & 31 AUG) and PREDATOR at The Prince Charles (01 SEP). The Prince Charles is also showing a PREDATOR + PREDATOR 2  double-bill (31 AUG) and TAMMY AND THE T-REX [Gore Cut], the latter as part of their BADASS B-MOVIES strand (01 SEP).

Speaking of B-Movies…

I’ll be hosting the last of my summer season of cult and curious cinema at Genesis Cinema this week, drawing BAR TRASH to a temporary close. It has been a real joy to build this programme with the gorgeous venue and our amazing audience. Thank you to everyone. Our sold out screening of MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE means we’ll be going out with a bang, and what better way to close our season at the American drive-in than with a movie where the vehicles are literally in revolt…?. We’ll be announcing the new Autumn/Winter season of BAR TRASH very shortly…

See you in the darkness, and stay safe.

Werner Herzog at 80: NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE d. Werner Herzog, 1979 at Goethe-Institut London SW7 (31 AUG 19:00).

“On 5 September 2022, Werner Herzog, will be 80 years old and to mark the occasion we return to two of his films. NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE, Herzog’s foray into the world of the gothic, will be shown once in our cinema, while his LESSONS IN DARKNESS on the destructive for of war and oil will be available online nationwide for a week.”

“The feature film we are showing to celebrate Werner Herzog’s 80th birthday is in itself a celebration. It is Herzog’s tribute to Germany’s golden era of silent film and specifically to Wilhelm Friedrich Murnau (1888-1931). Lotte Eisner, the well-known film historian of Weimar’s “haunted screen”, for whom Herzog famously walked from Munich to Paris in ice and snow, regarded Murnau as the greatest German filmmaker. For Herzog the retelling of “the greatest of all German films” was a way of bridging the void created by World War Two and Nazism, and of connecting his generation of filmmakers with those of the era of German silent film. Making his own version of Murnau’s classic was thus vital to forming Herzog’s identity as filmmaker and to placing himself in the wider context of German culture. “When I had finished NOSFERATU I remember thinking, ‘Now I am connected, I have reached the other side of the river at last.’ (Paul Cronin, Herzog on Herzog, 2002, p 152).” (Goethe-Institut)
