JANUARY 2023: What’s on in London this month

Explore what’s on in London this month with our regular epic roundup of repertory film seasons & festivals.

By RADIANT CIRCUS // Twitter @radiantcircus / Instagram @radiantcircus

Welcome to my first epic roundup of 2023!

After encountering some turbulence at the end of last year, it’s great to be planning some return trips to the cinema… And, as usual, there’s a lot going on…

Major new seasons this January include a complete AKIRA KUROSAWA retrospective (featuring lots of screenings from 35mm) and the SIGHT & SOUND GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME 2022 at BFI Southbank and IMAX. This month, the Sight & Sound countdown runs from numbers 95= to 66.

Elsewhere, there’s another strong showing from students on the NFTS curating MA, including Chris Cassingham’s BEYOND INTERPRETATION at ICA, and Heeyeon Park’s ‘I PURPLE U’ at The Prince Charles. JOHN SMITH: INTROSPECTIVE (1972–2022) – previously at ICA and Close-Up – was such a success in 2022 that two SOLD OUT programmes from ICA will be re-screened at Close-Up this month. And if that’s not enough for you, CELEBRATING JACK NICHOLSON opens at The Garden Cinema (there’s a season intro, party and screening of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST on 06 JAN if you’re a member…).

The big festival opening this month is London Short Film Festival (20 to 29 JAN). This year’s programme includes a strong representation from indie exhibitors, including T A P E, Zodiac Film Club, Club de Femmes, and Mondo Nights, and a collaboration with the Otherness Archive, as well as the usual short film strands, competition categories and industry events.

As usual, I’ll be topping up festival entries and undoubtably adding new rep seasons as they emerge throughout the month. Check back here for updates and watch out for my weekly Screen Guides which will resume w/c 06 JAN.

Looking across the scene, I’m pleased to see an increasing outcrop of discounted ticketing schemes. There are too many to list here, but scan your favourite venues for discounted days and ‘pay what you can’ screenings. I’ll try to shine a light on London’s most affordable cinema offerings in a future guide…

I’ve chosen MARK JENKIN’S THE CINEMATIC DNA OF ENYS MEN at BFI Southbank as my Featured Attraction of the Month. This is partly because I’m looking forward to ENYS MEN but also, having just completed my BAR TRASH presents TRASH PLANET season of 70s eco-horror films, seeing LONG WEEKEND (10 & 23 JAN) for the first time will be a long-overdue addition to my knowledge of the sub-genre.

See you in the darkness,

Richard // RADIANT CIRCUS

MARK JENKIN’S THE CINEMATIC DNA OF ENYS MEN at BFI Southbank

“Inevitably, when thinking of this era in Britain, a number of these films are not films at all, but highly innovative, haunting, weird or eerie, free-form, often experimental, sometimes oblique, yet always uncompromisingly authored productions made for the small screen. Some of my choices are linked to ENYS MEN through form, others by content; but in most cases, hopefully by a bit of both. After all, the greatest films mesh the two in a way that is hard to tell where one starts and the other finishes, and cannot ever be picked apart. There are films in this season that do not share similarities with ENYS MEN in either form or content, but are examples of work made by people who were, and are, willing to take risks; to experiment, maybe even to fail, all in the name of expanding the language of this youthful art form. For that reason alone, they remain a huge inspiration to me.”

Mark Jenkin, season curator (BFI Southbank)
