JUNE 2021: What’s on in London this month

Our epic RADIANT CIRCUS roundup of the film festivals & repertory seasons showing across London’s indoor & outdoor venues.

By RADIANT CIRCUS // Twitter @radiantcircus / Instagram @radiantcircus

Full fat rep seasons largely carry over from the first two reopening weeks of May, but exciting new arrivals this month include seasons dedicated to Agnès Varda, Andrei Tarkovsky, Wes Anderson and Bong Joon-ho at The Prince Charles, real-world outings for Sheffield Doc/Fest and London Short Film Festival at BFI Southbank, and a mini-season of films devoted to Almodóvar’s women at Catford Mews. See below for details.

The Drive In at Troubadour Meridian Water has an excellent offer of £14.99 per car per film until the end of June 2021. Which, if you already have a car… is good value! Whilst London’s COVID era drive-ins haven’t necessarily been bastions of alternative programming, The Drive In’s partnership with Four Wheel Events has created a weekly showcase for black-led films, Blackflix. This month’s choices include LOVE & BASKETBALL (2000), THE WOOD (1999), DELIVER US FROM EVA (2003), and BROWN SUGAR (2002). See below for details.

Whilst Rooftop Film Club might have wrapped their drive-ins, they continue to screen on the city’s skyline and are celebrating their 10th anniversary with a series of ‘Founder’s Top Ten’ programme choices (check venue website for details). We also like their partnership with RIBA which explores architecture on film to coincide with the London Festival of Architecture. Special presentations at their Peckham rooftop include: THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (14 JUN), PARASITE (22 JUN), and I AM LOVE (28 JUN). Their Stratford East venue also gets some special screenings, this time for Pride month: ROCKETMAN (16 JUN), THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT (23 JUN), and MOONLIGHT (30 JUN). See below for details.

Our Featured Attraction of the Month is Women Pioneers Of French Cinema which continues at Ciné Lumière. That’s in part because they’re showing one of my favourite films from one of my favourite filmmakers: Agnieszka Holland’s EUROPA EUROPA (1990 – main featured image). But it’s also because, even though we’ve been starved of cinema for so long, being able to afford to see every great film in a compact season is still a beautiful thing…

See you in the darkness,

Richard // RADIANT CIRCUS
