MAY 2023: What’s on in London this month

Explore what’s on in London this month with our regular epic roundup of repertory film seasons & festivals.

By RADIANT CIRCUS // Twitter @radiantcircus / Instagram @radiantcircus

And here’s your epic indie cinema roundup for May (sorry it’s a bit late…)!

I’ve tried to track as many repertory seasons as I can – there’s a lot of them. More film festivals will ping into my radar as the month unfolds, so please check back for updates (but there’s a bracing amount of diversity in what’s already listed here…).

In seasons, The Garden Cinema continues to go from strength to strength, demonstrating a combination of cinephile rigour with a comprehensive new programme dedicated to ALFRED HITCHCOCK: ACT 1 – 1927 TO 1945 and welcome attempts to mix things up more than a little bit, MUKHRIJAT: ARAB WOMEN FILMMAKERS. The latter is packed with director Q&As (and even that increasingly rare of exhibition formats, a discounted double bill!).

Elsewhere, 3+3: ÉRIC BAUDELAIRE starts at ICA and Ciné Lumière, featuring three of the director’s own works and three films he’s chosen by others, a new ARROW VIDEO CULT FILM gets underway at Everyman Screen On The Green, BEN WHEATLEY PRESENTS at Picturehouse Cinemas, and BRUCE LEE AT GOLDEN HARVEST starts at The Prince Charles.

Enfant terribles of the indie/alternative scene, Mondo Nights, begin a new weekly season of COURIER CINEMA at Biddle Bros pub celebrating bike delivery riders we have loved and lost, The Vito Project Queer Film Club continues their box office smash-hit season DRESSED TO THRILL: A SERIES OF FILMS EXPLORING DRESS CODE AND GENDER EXPRESSION at The Cinema Museum, and Token Homo’s BAR TRASH returns with a full new summer season of killer kaiju at Genesis Cinema, MONSTER MAYHEM!.

BFI Southbank begins their new month with a number of seasons packed with special events and guest appearances, including THE COMIC STRIP PRESENTS…, DARIO ARGENTO: DOORS INTO DARKNESS, FORGOTTEN TELEVISION DRAMA: REDISCOVERING THE HALF-HOUR PLAY, and MURIEL BOX: A WOMAN’S TAKE. Be warned, the Dario Argento ‘in-person’ screenings are looking fully booked, but do check for returns.

I’ve chosen BFI’s CINEMATIC SORCERESS: THE FILMS OF NINA MENKES as my Featured Attraction of the Month, simply because I love her work and can’t wait to hear her talk more about it.

See you in the darkness,

Richard // RADIANT CIRCUS

CINEMATIC SORCERESS: THE FILMS OF NINA MENKES at BFI Southbank

“For me, cinema is sorcery, a creative way to interact with the world in order to rearrange perception and expand consciousness, both my viewers’ and my own.”

– Nina Menkes

“Across a four-decade career, Menkes has established herself as one of most original voices in American independent filmmaking. Often working in collaboration with her actor sister Tinka, Menkes takes recognisable noirish plots – a soldier murders his wife, a sex worker kills her pimp – and translates them into enigmatic riddles, driven by dream logic and populated by ghosts.”

“There are echoes of Tarkovsky and Akerman in her minimal dialogue, hypnotic long takes and dense sound design, but Menkes’ point of view, firmly rooted in contemporary USA and Israeli politics, is distinctly her own. Always provocative, the most consistent theme spanning all of Menkes’ work, from her early shorts to recent documentary Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power, is an unflinching critique of the insidious male violence that underpins a patriarchal society.”
