Monday Classic Matinée: EMPLOYEES’ ENTRANCE d. Roy Del Ruth, 1933 at Regent Street Cinema (17 OCT 13:00).
“Back by popular demand – Pre-Code Hollywood: Rules are Made to be Broken! Discover previously lost cinematic gems, created in a golden age before cinema censorship, when dames were mouthy and gangsters came in all guises.”
“In 1930s New York, department stores were shiny new symbols of wealth and power. Within one gleaming pantheon of consumerism, Warren Williams plays Kurt Anderson – a ruthless and successful General Manager. Anderson rules his retail empire as an unchallenged autocrat, until Madelaine Walters (Loretta Young) arrives to challenge the status quo. Given the overt critique of capitalism in the central theme, this film could not have been made a matter of years later, due to the stalwart protectionism of the relatively draconian Hayes film censorship code. Roy Del Ruth directs Loretta Young, Warren William & Wallace Ford.” (Regent Street Cinema)
