We stay in North London for the next in our series of looks at streaming services that reward London’s indie venues with a trip to the historic Phoenix Cinema.

Phoenix Cinema is one of a clutch of historic London screen venues that take you back in time simply by stepping into their auditoriums. That these glorious venues remain dark is both an understandable and undeniable sadness as the COVID-19 shutdown continues. We might hear more news of when England will be opening back up next week, but it doesn’t look like hospitality and leisure will be very high on the list…
Until they can start selling tickets again for public screenings, venues like Phoenix need as much audience support as they can get. So, why not stream a new(ish) release and settle back into the comfort of your sofa knowing that your cash is directly helping the venue and their global partners? If this doesn’t work for you, we’ve also published an A-Z directory of venues with ways you can support them from a safe social distance.
Scroll down for details of the films that are streaming from Phoenix Cinema right now.

d. Gints Zilbalodis, 2019/Latvia
“After a crash landing, a young boy wakes on a mysterious island. Now he and a little bird must travel by motorcycle to escape a dark spirit and return home.”
d. Eva Mulvad, 2019/Denmark
“A heartbreaking portrait of Leila and Sahand, an Iranian couple who are forced to flee for their lives from Tehran where their secret affair and illegitimate child are both considered crimes, punishable by death.”
RECORDER: THE MARION STOKES PROJECT
d. Matt Wolf, 2019/USA
“A fiercely intelligent, radical activist who became a fabulously wealthy recluse in her later years, Marion Stokes was dedicated to furthering and protecting the truth — so much so that she recorded American television 24 hours a day for over 30 years. Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project peels back the curtain on her life, through a mix of Stokes’ own archive of recordings and interviews with those who knew her best.”
A GIRL FROM MOGADISHU
d. Mary McGuckian, 2019/Ireland
“Based on the testimony of Ifrah Ahmed. Fleeing war-torn Somalia in 2006, she is trafficked to Ireland where as an asylum-seeking refugee, she undergoes a traumatic medical examination which reveals the extent of her mutilation as a child. Traumatized by the memory, she turns her experiences into a force for good.”
d. Viggo Mortensen, 2020/Canada
“John lives with his partner, Eric, and their daughter, Mónica, in California, far from the traditional rural life he left behind years ago. John’s father, Willis, a headstrong man from a bygone era, lives alone on the isolated farm where John grew up. Willis is in the early stages of dementia, making running the farm on his own increasingly difficult, so John brings him to stay at his California home.” The virtual ticket includes and exclusive Q&A with Viggo Mortensen, Lance Henriksen, Laura Linney and Terry Chen.
