GOLDEN GATE GIRLS: 10th Anniversary d. S. Louisa Wei, 2013 + Q&A with the director, presented by Queer East x Sine Screen at Genesis Cinema (02 JUL 18:00).
“In GOLDEN GATE GIRLS, S. Louisa Wei reconstructs the life and career of Esther Eng (1914-70), a Chinese-American filmmaker who worked in the USA and Hong Kong in the 1930s and 1940s. A San Francisco native and openly lesbian, Eng achieved prominence at a time when the industry was heavily male-dominated, and succeeded in breaking gender and racial boundaries. But sadly, her contribution to film history is often overlooked, her feature films mostly lost.”
“This affectionate documentary juxtaposes Eng’s story with the experiences of two other pioneering women of her time: Anna May Wong, first Chinese-American actress to rise to international stardom, and film director Dorothy Arzner. Through archive and newly-found images, and interviews with those who knew her, Wei’s documentary paints a vivid picture of this forgotten queer pioneer.”
