THE CAT & THE CANARY d. Paul Leni, 1927 + Live electro score by Sam Enthoven and Arkadiusz Potyka, presented by Noisy Silent Film Club at Arthouse Crouch End (23 OCT 15:00).
“THE CAT AND THE CANARY is a 1927 American silent comedy horror film directed by the German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni. The relatives of Cyrus West gather at his estate on the 20th anniversary of his death to hear the reading of his will. Annabelle West (Laura La Plante) is named the heir to Cyrus’ fortune, under the condition that she is declared sane by a doctor (Lucien Littlefield). Later in the evening, the family is informed that a dangerously insane man known as “the Cat” is on the loose in the area. When Cyrus’ lawyer (Tully Marshall) is found dead, Annabelle fears she is the next target.”
“Continuing our monthly Silent Film slot, we are delighted to welcome back to The Arthouse, Sam Enthoven and Arkadiusz Potyka who bring electronic sound to silent cinema. Ark plays bass and other noise machines; Sam plays found sounds and a unique Russian instrument from the dawn of electronic music – the theremin. From minimal elements (and no laptops) they conjure up a richly atmospheric soundworld, helping audiences find new life and meaning in some of the world’s finest old films.”
