SOCIETY d. Brian Yuzna, 1989 + Intro presented by Not Another Film Club at Genesis Cinema (29 NOV 18:30).

“Ever wondered what the wealthy and powerful get up to when you’re not around? Billy did. SOCIETY (1989) is Brian Yuzna’s wickedly on the nose paranoid satire that follows Billy, a popular if troubled teenager who discovers the deep secrets festering atop the suburban ideal of his hometown.”

“Yuzna’s incisive directorial debut flips the John Hughes, American high school, coming of age drama on its head with a lovecraftian twist while retaining some of its classic humour. Billy has all the same questions all teenagers have. Am I adopted? Why are my parents so weird? Am I different from everyone else? Only here he finds the answers writhe and slither in plain sight.”

“Well received in Europe but shelved for 3 years after completion in the United States, SOCIETY is now considered a cult classic. With practical effects from award winning Japanese maestro Screaming Mad George and a script pointed directly towards critiquing the extant class relations of Reaganite America, the message here is clear, only one thing trickles down from the top, depravity.” (Not Another Film Club)
