APRIL 2022: What’s on in London this month

Explore what’s on in London this month with our regular epic roundup of repertory film seasons & festivals.

By RADIANT CIRCUS // Twitter @radiantcircus / Instagram @radiantcircus

Join us for the second of our Q-RATED! #QueerHorrorNights at The Castle Cinema: CARRIE (2013) Sunday 10 April 14:00. We’ll be donating a % of box office & inviting audience cash donations for WISH, a women’s mental health charity based in Tower Hamlets.

Welcome to our epic rep roundup for April!

BFI’s rep seasons continue with ANIMELIV ULLMANN: FACE TO FACE, and NIGHTMARES AND DAYDREAMS: A CENTENARY CELEBRATION OF SCREENWRITER NIGEL KNEALE whilst their BIG SCREEN CLASSICS get busy contemplating a question of faith. Of this bunch, the work of Liv Ullman stands out, with the programme featuring both intros/Q&As with the actor/director and her own directorial work.

New London venue The Garden Cinema adds THE GOLDEN AGE OF FRENCH CINEMA to their opening CELEBRATING MARLON BRANDO season, whilst CLOSE-UP ON JOHN CASSAVETES begins at the Shoreditch staple. The Prince Charles welcomes ALEX WINTER: LIVE ON STAGE at the top of the month and embarks on an exploration of PRE-CODE HOLLYWOOD a little later. They’ll also be spending A LONG WEEKEND IN 1995.

Both The PCC and ICA celebrate JOACHIM TRIER’S OSLO TRILOGY and Everyman adds a string of PAUL VERHOEVEN films from 35mm to their late nights at the Screen on the Green. SEASCAPES: OUR OCEANS ON SCREEN embarks with some holiday friendly offerings at Ciné Lumière – although it’s always a pleasure to list anything with THE MUPPETS! – before voyaging into deeper waters. ICA begins a trio of special programmes under the theme CATALAN CINEMA NOW! starting this month with INNOVATIONS (to be followed by INTERSECTIONS 14 to 15 MAY and IDENTITIES 28 to 29 MAY).

A bunch of new film festivals open this month with London Independent Film Festival (01 to 10 APR), The People’s Film Festival (02 to 09 APR), South Social Film Festival – Nordic Focus (02 APR), and Spanish Spring Weekend (01 to 03 APR) all joining our listings. Doubtless I’ll be updating this list as the month unfolds.

I’ve chosen the GENESIS 23RD BIRTHDAY season as my Featured Attraction of the Month (it continues in May too…). Whilst 23 might not be one of the milestones that gets marked down in the history books, the last two years have shown we should celebrate the glories of independent cinema at every chance we get. And who in this modern world doesn’t love a cinema ticket for £2.50?!

See you in the darkness,

Richard // RADIANT CIRCUS

RADIANT CIRCUS is delighted to announce the next screening supported by #ReviveTheDark, our audience-backed campaign for distinctive/DIY cinema! Sonic Cinema presents AUSTRIAN SYNAESTHETIC CINEMA at Cafe OTO (06 MAY 20:00).

GENESIS 23RD BIRTHDAY at Genesis Cinema

“Join us as we celebrate with a selection of our favourite films that have come out since we opened in 1999. All tickets are at £2.50, and our beer and popcorn are at 1999 prices!” (Genesis Cinema)
