NOW BOOKING: Fringe! queer shorts at LSFF 2021

As we hurtle towards the final weekend of this year’s London Short Film Festival, we thought we’d run a few queer shorts up your flagpole. Streaming 22 – 24 JAN 2021.

One of the things we love about the London Short Film Festival is their collabs with indie makers and exhibitors. So, we were really delighted to see our fine friends at Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest fingered for this year’s duties.

Now Here’s What We Have to Say! is a programme of five queer shorts that reflect this year’s festival theme of the “collective” (scroll down for the full programme). Fringe!’s gorgeous programmers had this to say about their choices:

Us queers know a thing or two about banding together and getting creative when times get tough. From revenge fantasies in France, to the unity of three young friends in Brazil, we never stop at pushing forward the collaborative art of film to tell our stories. We at Fringe! are thrilled to present these five hand-picked shorts, that put into sound and vision what words never could.

Grant Gulczynski & Martha Kate Margetson

These bold and shiny shorts are accompanied by a reading from Crayola the Queen for a classic Fringe! Drag Bedtime Story. The livestream will be BSL interpreted. Tickets cost £5 and the programme starts streaming at 20:30 on 22 JAN 2021 (see below for full ticketing info).

TERROR, SISTERS!

Today is a day unlike any before. Today is the day Kalthoum and their girlfriends imagine their revenge. Hold on tight, as we open our programme with this camp-tastic clap back to transphobia.

FLOURISH

d. Heather María Acs (14′ / 2019 / USA)
A big juicy helping of queer joy in this stunning short, a testament to the magic of dance and the transformative power of drag.

BONDE

d. Asaph Luccas (18′ / 2019 / Brazil)
The screen erupts with colour and life in this captivating short, as three young friends from a Brazilian favela seek refuge in their city’s queer community.

BEAT IS PROTEST – FUNK BY FEMALE OPTICS

d. Mayara Efe (23′ / 2019 / Brazil)
A pulsating documentary about a sisterhood of female musicians claiming their space in the underground funk scene of São Paulo.

THEY LOOKED AT ME AND I SMILED

d. Ben Edelberg (12′ / 2019 / Canada)
When your body is the canvas, does the performance really end when the audience leave? Closing out our programme is this delicate and eerily relevant meditation on art and space.

How to get involved…

You can access all of the virtual LSFF screenings on their Eventive platform. We found the programme on their festival website a little easier to get a view of everything that’s on in each strand and programme.

Each day of the festival, a number of programmes will go live for your enjoyment. You can pre-order tickets for each programme and will receive an email reminder when your screening goes live so you don’t miss a thing.

Each programme has a 48 hour availability period after it goes live. In this 48 hour window, you will also have the opportunity to buy a ticket if you haven’t already, unlock the programme and start watching. Like Brigadoon, each programme will disappear at the end of its 48hrs.

You get a 24 hour watch period at any point during this 48 hour window once you’ve started streaming (even if you click in the final, fading minutes…).

Special Events are priced at £5 each (plus booking fee) and New Shorts programmes at £4 each (plus fee) which, for the most part, gets you over an hour of shorts. Industry Events and the BFI Southbank installation are free.

LSFF are also offering money-saving Festival Passes as follows: Competition (UK & International) at £25 (plus fee); UK Competition at £15 (plus fee); International Competition at £15 (plus fee); Documentary at £12 (plus fee).
