Gypsy has been referred to as the greatest American musical, frequently considered one of the crowning achievements of mid-twentieth century’s musical theatre. Based on the 1957 autobiography by Gypsy Rose Lee, it is the story of a demanding stage mother living out her missed opportunities by turning her two daughters into frustrated performers.
Sondheim, who died in November 2021 wrote both music and lyrics for his works including A Little Night Music, Company and Sweeney Todd. His early career was as lyricist of the original stage musicals West Side Story (1957) with music by Leonard Bernstein, and Gypsy (1959) music by Jule Styne. Although Sondheim initially refused to write only the lyrics, he was persuaded by his mentor Oscar Hammerstein to accept the job.
After the successful film adaptation of WEST SIDE STORY (1961) also starred Natalie Wood, GYPSY followed and was directed by veteran Mervyn LeRoy.
The Cinema Museum will benefit from ticket sales, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to support their ongoing work to promote, maintain, improve and advance education of the public in the performing arts, and to help keep the Grade II listed building going.
Doors open at 13.00, and the film starts at 14.00.
Refreshments will be available in the licensed cafe/bar.
