NOW BOOKING: Rooftop cinema returns to Bar Elba, SE1

In our hunger for live cinema experiences we’re seeking out London’s outdoor film events. Next stop, Waterloo Station.

Rooftop cinema returns to Bar Elba in Waterloo from 17 May onwards. We haven’t been there before, but the sales pitch is strong with booze:

“Housed on an epic viewing platform, our rooftop cinema looks out cross insane views of London. Making it the ideal choice for those looking for unique date ideas, a place to catch up with old friends or who are simply searching for a boozy night in the city!”

BAR ELBA

Films are projected onto a large movie screen and every booking comes with a pair of headphones to keep you in the action. Films in May start at 21:00, with earlier Friday evenings joining the lineup in June at 19:00 along with weekend matinees at 14:00.

All cinema tickets need to be booked with an accompanying drinks package, with prices starting from £5 for your film ticket plus a further £20 for a ‘standard drinks package’ (that gets you x1 drinks voucher, some popcorn and bag of sweets).

Opening film titles start with PULP FICTION on 17 MAY (currently looking SOLD OUT), and then include GIRLS TRIP (18 MAY), AMERICAN PIE (19 MAY), JUNO (20 MAY), BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (23 MAY), GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (24 MAY), BIG (25 MAY), HOT FUZZ (26 MAY) and BLACK PANTHER (31 MAY).

More films are scheduled from June until the end of August. The programming choice continues the same kind of “cool retro” you get at venues like Rooftop Film Club and Backyard Cinema, where 80s & 90s classics rub shoulders with some more recent titles. Of course, anyone who programmes Mary Harron’s AMERICAN PSYCHO (03 JUN) gets our enthusiastic backing.

The indie screen culture we love has taken a battering. Coronavirus has closed venues, silenced exhibitors & isolated audiences.

To help reanimate movies beyond the mainstream, we’ve relaunched our subscription service as a crowdfunder called REVIVE THE DARK. With the backing of our subscriber community we will be able to:

  • Sponsor DIY, indie & alternative cinema
  • Celebrate outstanding acts of exhibition
  • Expand our scene content & coverage
