Mike Leigh wants to discuss his films in a new way. Instead of the usual season, with the occasional Q&As, he has designed this season to cover his films in chronological order. He has allowed sufficient time after each screening for an in-depth discussion of the film’s content and meaning and how this changed over time.
From 8th September to 30th October, Mike Leigh will conduct these conversations with his friend and long-time collaborator, Gary Yershon. This season is divided into two parts exploring the themes in the films as they have been developed over the course of Mike Leigh’s long career.
This is the first such themed retrospective in which Mike Leigh himself discusses his films’ content and meaning.
“The Garden Cinema, on the edge of London’s Covent Garden, is beautiful and is an inspired creation. What is great about the season is that there will be a continuous discussion after each of the films. We will focus on their content and form – not just on how I make them, which is secondary to what the films are actually about.”
